A lot of plays in this thread are mistakes but this one should take the cake as it was done on purpose.

When I was younger I remember seeing Wayne Gretzky playing for the Kings and taking a ridiculous offside. He caught a break away and was so far ahead he spinned backwards to see how much time he had. His body was offside

If that's the case it was called wrong. If you have control of the puck your body can go in before it.

I'd call this one of the dumbest hockey plays in history, but Clowe actually got away with it. If any of the refs had been looking and busted him for it like they should have, it would certainly qualify. What the heck was he thinking?

Patty Roy dangling Gretzky and skating past the red line. One of the dumbest, yet funniest plays of all time.

I think is was 5-6 years ago when Hartnell threw his glove at a guy on a breakaway. I think it was either in OT or in the last couple minutes of a tie game. Obviously a penalty shot was called.

This one is probably the single dumbest hockey play I've seen. With some of these it's a matter of misreading the play or letting emotions get in the way of playing the game. With Hartnell, there was just absolutely no reasonable explanation to do what he did... his higher-order thinking must have been switched to "off".

This is one of the funniest things I've seen in quite a while.

I'm crying right now

It's not the celebration that's the brain fart, it's the fact that he purposely shoots it in his own net. Maybe he saw the open net and hasn't scored in a long time - all while having his brain shut down - he decides to shoot at his own goalie.

To me, that takes the cake

Did he have the puck?

I thought a player entering the zone with the puck cannot be called offsides. A player by himself cannot be offsides.
