Edit:
Oilers: Drouin + Fonstad + Lindgren or McNivens
Montreal: 1st round pick + minor cap dump like Benning

Sorry for the confusion

Lets say the Oilers draft 4-5th overall... The habs dont have a legit top center to maximize Drouin's potential while Edm has 2, I think it could be a win win trade for both teams, Habs could take a cap dump not named Lucic and add a kid or 2 like Fonstad + Lindgren\McNivens...
Or vice versa with Drai or RNH go the other way for more futures and a cap dump.
If you want Drouin, try it without a cap dump. Currently Montreal looks closer to contention than Edmonton. Also Kota could be their #1 C down the road. He is so young and already good.

OP is a Habs fan, and the Oilers aren’t giving up one of our centres for futures

I'm confused.
Someone is proposing that Edmonton packs not first overall and Lucic and that Edmonton gets a very good player in return to play on our top 2 lines?
CONFUSING!
Would be pretty hard for Edmonton to say no to that.
But honestly I don't understand why on earth the Habs would make this trade.

Drouin-McDavid-
Hopkins-Drai-

Now Edmonton just needs 2 right wingers that can keep up with those dudes and we're 1/3 way to winning a cup.

As a Habs fan, I have interest in three players in the top 13 not including the obvious top 3.

Boldy (7/8)
Lavoie (12/13)
Kaliyev (10ish)

Byram wouldn't be the worst pick obviously, as he's far and away the best defenseman in this years draft --- but not crazy about moving Drouin for him.

Would rather the Habs package other pieces (Lehkonen, 2nds, Tatar, Petry etc etc) and get Lavoie, then use their own pick to get Suzuki or Harley. Moving Drouin isn't going to help us out much unless its Kakko or Podkolzin we are going for.

Montreal wouldn't trade Drouin for the pick alone, let alone add, and take on an anchor contract.
montreal wouldn’t trade Drouin for the 4th or 5th overall pick alone?

I mean Drouin is decent, but he has some huge holes in his game. Plus Montreal already has a lot of skilled wingers.

I would easily take the pick if I were them.

I wouldn't trade Drouin for that return He has flaws in his game for sure but he is extremely skilled. This year he has already matched his first MTL- season total of 46 points in 18 less games.

Habs need offense and Drouin is an integral part of it. But most Habs fans seem to blame him for what he is not rather give him credit for what he is. We have enough defensively responsible wingers.

He's on pace to have the best productive season of his entire career.
He's 23 yrs old with four more years on his contract, a decent one at 5.5
He's 2nd in overall pts on his team, a team in the 2nd wild card spot fighting to stay afloat.
If there was any time not to trade this player, it's now

Where did you see the OP specifying what is going to Habs in the trade? Yep, there's a mention of two top centers, but is the moving piece Drai or Nuge? Not the clearest trade proposal I've seen...

(BTW, I haven't noticed any special enthusiasm in the fanbase for trading Drouin. I'm not sure if he's a key part of their emerging core going forward, but he seems to be fitting in nicely. Time will tell I guess.)

Edit: LOL now I got it too. Those kids are the centers moving. I thought they were Habs prospects. "Slow day"

Wasn't Montreal in the running to sign Lucic ? If the rumours are right they even offer more money . So who knows
If the NHL didn't have guaranteed contracts Milan Lucic wouldn't be in the league . Montreal have no need for Lucic or reason to help Edmonton get out from under his brutal contract .

I believe the tide has turned. Drouin’s all too frequent costly turnovers and lack of effort are drawing the ire of a lot of fans. He’s not an untouchable.

Not true. Lucic at $2-3 Million is an effective player.

I would do:

:edmonton
Nugent-Hopkins

:habs
Drouin

put back domi at LW and Nugent as our first center for the moment.

It would be for MTL:

Domi/RNH/Gallagher
Tatar/Kotka/Armia

and for EDM:

Drouin/Mcdavid/Yam
Benson/Draisail/Puljujarvi

So trading a 1st line forward with potential for a pick who hopes to end up like Drouin is now? Yeah... Don't see the incentive outside of age. Let's not act like top 5 picks are locks to be superstars. Drouin is a perfect example. He's signed to a good deal. Why move him for a hope and a prayer, especially when they need all the help they can get right now? So yeah... Straight up is bad. Adding makes it worse. Taking a cap dump make it laughably bad.
