Man, THIS is why you gotta subscribe to The Athletic. Absolutely RIVETING content by Drance. Hoffman wants to go to X team lollll. X team has to clear space.

Journalism at it's finest.
all sports journalism is like this, if its not puns its a full article about something without actually saying anything.

If Vancouver is the team he's waiting for to clear cap Im not sure there's a deal to be made. Unless they are waiting to see what happens with virtanen, and possibly ferland being on LTIR I don't see how they could make it work

They say team "x" like it's forbidden knowledge but then hint it is Vancouver? Anything wrong with just saying it is Vancouver? Or is this all nonesense?

Vancouver, B.C.
why for Van?

Virtanen is slotted to be in the top 6 this season and even possibly on the top line with Pettersson.

Lauzon would be Vancouver's 5-7 Dman

value isnt there

If the goal is the topic of this thread, they sign Hoffman and then trade Virtanen for a third pairing RHD with upside. Did you miss the post I was responding to?

Cheers

I doubt teams are going to be able to trade away cap dumps in any reasonable fashion at this point. Vegas and Islanders were exceptions, handcuffed into giving away good D men for peanuts. We might see a similar deal out of Tampa yet. But there's not going to be a lot of takers for bad deals in these circumstances. Who wants to pay Loui Eriksson six million to sit on the bench during a global financial crisis? If Yzerman or Dorion are to acquire contracts like that, the sweeteners are gonna have to be way too huge.

Oh look someone else getting all upset and crying about journalism. Mike Hoffman has a team picked out. If anyone was wondering why he hadn't signed yet, now they know. That is news, despite whatever your post is implying.

You guys whine about everything, my goodness. This isn't even a big deal but you'd think someone misreported something major. Nope - just Mike Hoffman updates. The humanity!

Would you rather get updates, or find out for the 1000th time that the some team wants to unload garbage for a first line winger? Because that's the alternative.

Vancouver may actually have around $32M in some expiring contracts on depth players in one to two years, but they don't have as much flexibility as you might think. During that same period, they will presumably extend Hughes and Petterson to long term contracts. Boeser will need to be extended as well. Between those three players, Vancouver may easily use two thirds of that cap relief (expiring contracts). This doesn't even include a Demko extension and Horvat needing to be extended in the not to distant future.

The point is that you have less flexibility to spend on large, longer term UFA contracts than you might think on the surface.

I look at Colorado as a similar case. Colorado has a number of expiring contracts, but they will be spending much of that on large contract extensions on core players. They will have to let some good players on expiring players walk in the process. It stresses the importance of having cheap young depth players to fill in the gaps.
EP and Hughes will get an additional 12-15 on top of their current deals combined. Boeser already is at 6, it’s not like his next raise is going to be massive.

$15 Million for both EP and Hughes means that you would be signing them both in the range of $8.5M AAV long term (considering their current AAV), which would be surprisingly good. If Boeser signs long term at his current AV, you are looking at 2/3rds of the value of the upcoming expiring contracts for the three.

Sure, but that other third is 10 million or so. Not insignificant.

So Hoffman wants to join the X Men?

Does that mean Benning is Professor X?
This is 'breaking news'? I'm sure there are lots of teams in the league would love to sign Hoffman on a team-friendly deal but have to move players and create cap space in order to do it.

If that team is Vancouver, they have a ton of boat-anchor contracts to move first. I doubt Hoffman will cool his heels waiting around.

The guy should just go to Nashville or CBJ, two good cities and fits.
