Quinn Hughes from University of Michigan (Canucks #7th Overall Draft Selection in 2018)

HockeyIntangibles: Draft Success a start, More work ahead for Canucks
- Explore draft details, off-season moves, and the value of Chris Tanev.

With other great additions like Tyler Madden (C) son of former three-time Stanley Cup Champion John Madden and Finland's U18 Captain Tomi Ultunen (LD), the Canucks are poised for yet another strong draft class. The team managed to solve its defensive draft pool deficiencies with three top defencemen including only the second defenceman taking in the draft in Quinn Hughes. Jim Benning and staff have done well to address key needs in the prospect pool the team still needs some alternations on the immediate future.

Quinn Hughes was a no-brainer pick at #7, but you have to be little alarmed about the number of smaller, skilled players who could be in this lineup next season. They're going to get steamrollered along the walls by some of those big, heavy Pacific Division teams unless the Canucks can address the 'grit factor' either via trades or free agency.

Not much doubt that kids like Pettersson, Dahlen and Hughes will have huge targets strapped on their backs as soon as they start putting up points. That's just the way it is in the NHL.

Do teams really get steamrolled in todays NHL?

Yeah gotta disagree here just because they have some size still. I do agree with you, regarding too many small players but one thing this group would be very adept at is moving the puck. This may make the older, less skilled players expendable.

Sure it’s possible but these prospects are just raw assets for the team that will be in 3-5 years. Some will not pan out, some will be traded, UFAs will be signed, etc. The goal should be to acquire max value assets in the draft and then shape and refine your team as you go. The final product certainly isn’t going to look like our prospect pool of today and that’s normal.
