NHL Draft Drawing to be conducted April 20

NEW YORK -- The National Hockey League Draft Drawing, a weighted lottery system to determine the order of selection for the first 14 picks of the 2006 Entry Draft, will take place Thursday, April 20, at 12 p.m., ET, at the NHL's New York office.

The Draft Drawing will involve clubs that did not qualify for this season's Stanley Cup Playoffs. The Draft Drawing result does not affect the draft order for the remainder of the first round and rounds two through seven.

NEW YORK - The St. Louis Blues won the National Hockey League Draft Drawing today and retained the first overall drafting position for the 2006 NHL Entry Draft, Saturday, June 24 at General Motors Place in Vancouver (6 p.m., ET, TSN, OLN). The Blues had the greatest chance that one of the numbered sequences assigned to them would be the winning combination, 25.0%, based on inverse order of regular-season finish. Under the lottery system, only the five teams with the fewest points had the chance to win the first overall selection; no team could move up more than four spots and no team could move backward more than one.

The Blues have never selected first overall in their 39-year history. The club's highest pick was forward Perry Turnbull, selected second overall in 1979.

The order of selection for the first 14 drafting positions in each round of the 2006 Entry Draft is as follows:

1. St. Louis Blues
2. Pittsburgh Penguins
3. Chicago Blackhawks
4. Washington Capitals
5. Boston Bruins
6. Columbus Blue Jackets
7. New York Islanders
8. Phoenix Coyotes
9. Minnesota Wild
10. Florida Panthers
11. Los Angeles Kings
12. Atlanta Thrashers
13. Toronto Maple Leafs
14. Vancouver Canucks

The remaining drafting positions will be determined at the conclusion of the Stanley Cup Playoffs.

The Drawing was conducted at the NHL's New York office.

Why? It doesn't really matter to either of those team.

If theres any last thing for them to look forward to, its the chance of potentially being drawn higher than expected. Bottom three have a shot at #1, not sure how it goes beyond that.

Leafs/Nucks's fans will be interested even if the odds of their winning 1.3% combined are basically nonexistant... they/we/I can dream that the near impossible happens.

Even besides that... it will tell us who gets the 1st overall draft spot, and that's of interest to most of us regardless of whether it's our preferred team or not.

1.3% chance is to move up the max 4 spots, not to move up to #1

leafs would move up to #9 if they win the lottery

I know, that's what I was referring to... combined the Leafs/Nuck's have an infinitessimally small 1.3% chance of getting a better draft spot, (9th/10th) respectively if they were to win.

Actually this year I would be as happy at second as first. Even third would not be a disaster. For the Pens this pick really is not nearly as important as it is to any of the other rebuilding teams, though it certainly will not hurt and I am excited about the prospects. But please, please, please make it be the first overall for the Pens anyways. I want to see collective HF heads explode. ;)

The Blues have never picked 1st, so it would be nice to have the #1 overall pick once.

But if it was a choice between that or watching people go ballistic because the Pens got the #1 overall pick again, ... Jaded-Fan, I'm pulling for 'ya! :D

so you move up 4 spots in the draft if you win. Big deal.

If you picked the previous three seasons in the 11-14 range (not good enough to make the playoffs, but not bad enough to warrant a top 10 pick), then winning the lottery and breaking the chain of mediocrity is a blessing.

In all honesty I have no real feelings for tommorow. I'm just as comfortable with the Pens picking first, second, or third.

It will be funny to see people go ballistic if the Pens win, but some other team can win this year I hope. Having Crosby as a Penguin, I could care less if the league made us forfeit our first rounder for a few years.

Of course, I'm excited to see who we do end up with. But I would rather see a team like the Blues win this year.

You've kind of got to understand why people can be resentful right?

Exactly. See above as well. It really sucks to compete year in and year out, and only hope that you can get an impact player with your pick. Seriously, the Kings have been just a poorly managed as the Pens were before they sold everything off. The difference? The Pens will go deep into the playoffs probably about a decade before the Kings will.

Yup. It doesn't really bother me that much.

But let me put it this way - I'd give up the Pens top pick this year for even a chance to have snuck in the playoffs as an 8th seed. I hope this is the last year that the lottery matters to me.

Well at least it can't be Malkin to Barker bad.

Probably Staal to Toews or Toews to Staal. It really doesn't matter this draft if we pick 3rd or 4th anyway.

When you've been looking at the 8th seed (if you're lucky) and a first round exit for the last decade(or pretty much the whole duration of your franchise) I bet you would probably re-think that.

Cups:

Penguins 2
Kings 0

Not that the Kings have any luck with their early picks either, but it was the Pens tanking that basically got them those first two(and there will be more)
