I had some fun with this app concocting all kinds of scenarios, realistic and not. However the rankings aren’t very close to most rankings now

(2) Quinton Byfield, C - Can develop into a potential franchise C
(32) Jeremie Poirier, LD - had a chance to take Wallinder, but thought I've done that like 5 times already.
(51) Drew Commesso, G - 2nd best goalie in the draft?
(58) Theodor Niederbach, C - Potential 2-way center
(63) Evan Vierling, C - 34 points in 28 games after leaving Flint.
(65) Alexander Pashin, RW - small skilled winger
(113) Ian Moore, RD - Some think he could be a surprise first rounder, according to McKeen's. Could be a long-term project.
(125) Ryder Rolston, RW - Supposedly plays like his dad, and his dad was good.
(156) Alex Cotton, RD - more points than Byram.
(187) Dmitri Zlodeyev, C - Russian center with a two-way game, good on draws

Traded down in round 2... and also traded up
(3) Tim Stutzle, C - still not sold on him, but OK.
(39) Ryan O'Rourke, LD - Solid LD
(40) Mavrik Bourque, C - Could be a good PP center.
(58) Tyler Kleven, LD - Solid LD
(63) Emil Heineman, LW - goal scoring winger
(113) Calle Clang, G - big Swedish netminder
(125) Dmitri Zlodeyev, C - center with potential
(141) Alex Cotton, RD - outscored Byram this year
(156) Mason Langenbrunner, RD - Jamie's boy. can skate
(160) Daniil Zaitsev, LD - not sure
(163) Samuel Hlavaj, G - another goalie prospect to watch
(187) Jan Bednar, G - another goalie prospect to watch

Needs:
#1C - Not sure we hit that target. Stutzle might not be a center. Bourque probably doesn't skate well enough to be a good top 6 center. Thinking more 3C with PP for him. Zlodeyev is a bit of a sleeper.
#1LD - Didn't really hit that either. Picked up a couple of character LDs in O'Rouke and Kleven. Both are most likely 2nd or 3rd pairing guys if they make it. Honestly, though, there was nobody at 32. And even when I've traded down from 1 to get a mid-round first, I really can't say I'm too impressed with the LD available.
#1G - Took three swings.

Traded from 1 to 3, got a 21, 52 and 125.
I'm almost never impressed with what's around in the mid to late first.

(3) Tim Stutzle, C
(21) Lukas Cormier, LD
(32) John-Jason Peterka, RW
(51) Drew Commesso, G
(52) William Villeneuve, RD
(58) Theodor Niederbach, C
(63) Alexander Pashin, RW
(65) Emil Heineman, LW
(113) Alex Cotton, RD
(125) Jacob Truscott, LD
(156) Dmitri Zlodeyev, C
(187) Mason Langenbrunner, RD

Won the lottery again. Traded 1 & 65 to NJ for 7, 10, 15, 130 & 192...
But for me, the real thing here is 1 for 7/10
Askarov never makes it past Chicago. So I have to take him at 7.
I grab Sanderson at 10.
At 15, I take Lapierre

(7) Yaroslav Askarov, G
(10) Jake Sanderson, LD
(15) Hendrix Lapierre, C
(32) Brendan Brisson, C
(51) Vasili Ponomaryov, C
(58) Theodor Niederbach, C
(63) Emil Heineman, LW
(113) Ian Moore, RD
(125) Alex Cotton, RD
(130) Dmitri Zlodeyev, C
(156) Pavel Gogolev, LW
(187) Mason Langenbrunner, RD
(192) Maxim Beryozkin, LW

I don't think this could playout IRL. Doubt NJ gives that much.
Even if they did, Sanderson probably doesn't last until 10.

But would you give up Lafreniere for Askarov, Sanderson and Lapierre?

Replace Sanderson with Lundell, and Lapierre with Jarvis, and then I might have to consider it a bit.

I had Askarov/Sanderson/Lundell and then got Khusnutinov at 32 before my browser froze.

Oh, interesting trio. I'm really just not a big Sanderson guy. There are a lot of forwards I would go with before I get to Sanderson in this draft. I understand that is not everyone, though.

There was one scenario where I drafted Askarov (Chicago always takes him before 10) and then Chicago stole Sanderson, but I was able to get Raymond at 10 and Lundell at 15.

I feel like I've gamed the app to get the players I want.
Probably should have drafted more D - but there just aren't that many I want, and there always seems to be better forwards available.

More and more I'm looking at Commesso at 51. And starting to wonder if he should be considered at 32.

The highest I've seen him ranked in any list is 56th, and he averages out at 82nd across lists I've collected. Granted, you never know where people are going to start taking goalies, but I wouldn't use that 32nd on him.

Today's draft
no trades
(4) Jake Sanderson, LD - minute eating LD with untapped offense
(32) Mavrik Bourque, C - probably not more than a 3C who can anchor a 2nd PP unit.
(51) Theodor Niederbach, C - Could be a 2-3 C.
(58) Luke Evangelista, RW - London hockey factory. Top nine winger with good compete and great hockey sense.
(63) Ozzy Wiesblatt, RW - small, feisty and skilled winger. Not a great skater though.
(65) Drew Commesso, G - Why not?
(113) Cross Hanas, LW - Winger with skill - but not a lot else? Probably not yzerman's cup of tea.
(125) Ian Moore, RD - RD with size, skill and skating.
(156) Viktor Persson, RD - Solid all-around D
(187) Matteo Costantini, C - HP likes him at 77. So why not

(65) Emil Heineman, LW
(113) Ronan Seeley, LD
(125) Dylan Garand, G
(156) Viktor Persson, RD
(187) Matteo Costantini, C

  • Takes care of C with Byfield and Niederbach.
  • LD doesn't get any #1 potential with Seeley and Kleven, but is there a #1 LD potential in this draft outside of Sanderson?
  • Who knows on goaltending - but I've cooled on Commesso.
  • Reichel/Heineman and Evangelista give us some good hope for skill on the wing. If you get both, one's gotta make it, right? Maybe not.
  • I don't think Reichel, Evangelista, or Persson will be available where I drafted them.

O’Rourke and Guhle have some similar qualities at LD. O’Rourke could be a good option if he’s there in round 2, but pretty sure Guhle will go in round 1. I actually think Guhle and Sanderson are pretty similar, but that’s just me.

I like Niederbach a lot in round 2 or 3. Also would be good with Reichel at 32, I prefer him to Peterka (from the little I’ve seen of both).

I don’t think there is #1 LD potential in this draft inside of Sanderson. Lol
