I'm pretty sure a Japanese player has been taken before. Not for a long while though.

Kings took a goalie with the 8th or 9th round pick. He played at the World championships according to NHL.com. Doesn't mention if it was the A or B pool.

I think he is the first Japanease ever draft by an NHL team. Jim Paek from Korea was select by Pittsburgh Penguins round 9 #170 overall 1985 NHL Entry Draft.

The Canadiens drafted Hiroyuki Miura back in 1992.

The Canadiens also drafted another Japanese-Canadian player by the name of Ryan Kuwabara 39th overall in the 2nd round in 1990

I could be wrong (I never asked him or anything, but just by his look), I think Sawada is half indian, not half Chinese/Japanese.

Nick Fugère is also half indian...

Just googled Sawada... the name appears to be very Oriental.
