Maybe if he wasn't so bad at hockey he would be part of the solution instead of the problem.
spoken like someone who hasn't watched him play hockey

i appreciate his lack of filter on this one, blake & co have to make big moves this offseason if they're not going to fully commit to a teardown & rebuild. they p***yfooted around the last couple offseasons and hoped they'd catch lightning in a bottle but this roster's true colors showed. it's either make a run for eichel and then some, and hope you can make another run on the last couple years of kopi's contract -- or you commit to sucking until then and ship doughty out. he ain't stickin around for what, 6 more years of this shit and he's earned the right to leave.

Didn't he say a few years ago that he had no interest in a rebuild and needed to see the team win now if he was going to stay there? Then without any change he went on to sign a maximum length contract.

I have to seriously question his IQ if he thinks that team has time left. They've been out of time for about 3 seasons now.

A lot of unsuaul amount of DD bashing. He's really outspoken, and he's making a case for the Kings to bring In some help since the cupboard is full. Makes sense. However, if the Kings are still gonna be bad then there's no reason to hold onto players who can bring in a good value.

Man he's already won 2 Cups, a bunch of personal accolades, and is super rich
Probably the least person that should be complaining

Doesn't change the fact he was the only one on the Kings this year who didn't look like they had given up.

It's hard for them to bring in a bunch of guys when Doughty is probably 3-4m per year overpaid making 11 million per year. If the cap continued to increase then maybe there was a chance it turned out to be a decent deal in the long run, but he has to know that his own contract has handcuffed the team.

The Kings will have to finish moving on from the old guard. They already shipped out Carter, next up should be Brown, Quick and Doughty. Only Kopitar should stay, he still has gas left in the tank and will be rejuvenated by playing with their young talented prospects.
Are you implying Doughty doesn't have gas still in the tank? Doughty was very good this year

He's good and has gas left in the tank but will cost too much for the Kings to hold on to for what he brings. $11M is way too much for what he brings. There will only be room for one of them between him and Kopitar, and to me, the Kings shouldn't hesitate.

Such a typical Drew thread.

Says the things literally everyone on this forum is thinking, gets bashed for it just because it's DD.

All he's saying is the Kings' best players had great seasons (absolutely true) and the organization has an assload of assets and cap space to weaponize this summer and the roster could use some help by Blake being aggressive. If I said that, I wouldn't be controversial, but because it's Drew, get out the pitchforks.

This thread is a perfect example of posters who undervalue franchise defensemen like Doughty(although to be fair is probably overpaid a couple million) and overvalue offensive D men. Also many forget how good guys like Lidstrom, Chelios and bourque were well into their 30s, I truly believe Doughty will be one of those guys but only time will tell.

The King's will keep playing after you retire Drew and make a new core of young players. YOU are running out of time. You signed that contract when it was obvious they were rebuilding. Don't blame the team because you wanted to stay in the sun and beaches.

I love him as a player but he's one of the dumbest players I've ever heard make words come out of his mouth.

There's no point just waiting for these prospects to develop when you've got guys in their prime, guys that are hungry to win and guys that are sick of losing so, yeah, we've got to bring guys in."
Doughty is 31 years old, Kopitar is 33, Quick is 35 and Brown is 36.

Lmao. "Prime"

Doughty is right. They are running out of time. Any year now these guys "in their prime" could fall off a cliff but still be crippling the team with their contracts, hurting the new cores ability to contend.

What Doughty is really describing is why the four of them shouldn't have gotten the term on their contracts that they did. He's literally describing how they are not worth the money and term they got on their contracts. Lol!

There's nothing wrong with Drew wanting the Kings to ice as good of a team as possible. Playing on a rebuilding team sucks.

Doesn't necessarily mean the Kings will do that.

Very few players ever end up like Lidstrom who always played in the playoffs even playing for 20 years.

drew and the kings won the cup in year 4 with him. He just finished year 13. Realistically their timeline to contend doesn’t line up with his remaining prime years.

but after 13 seasons in LA does he want to go somewhere else? Are the kings prepared to retain Part of the contract to facilitate the move?

the toughest decision for teams is when they have top level players who are due to become ufa in their late 20’s. These guys want the max term 8 year contract. Majority of the time the teams give it to them. OEL, Jossi, Stamkos, etc. Got them. NYI offered it to Tavares.

Blues said no to Backes. Didn’t match the 5 year term that Boston gave him. They ended up winning that decision. But it’s so hard to give the up the first couple to few good years that player has left as you get judged immediately on how that player performs elsewhere.

But realistically, players typically decline once they exit their early 30’s of 32/33 so if you have them til they are 36, there should be a 2-3 year decline in play that you have to absorb. If you are a contender during the first 4/5 years then you roll the dice in it. If you are not, you won’t turn it around fast enough to maximize the prime years left and are paying for a declining player.

He had a loaded trophy case, just needs a WC Gold to get in the triple-gold club.

Personally he has it better than anybody else right now, two cups, Norris, two Olympic Golds, high paycheck, can't get better than that. By the time he was 24 he was set to be in the HHOF.

He's not wrong, they bottomed out and accumulated a deep prospect pool, with another opportunity to add more this draft. If their current prospect pool isn't good enough to build a contender out of now, it never will be. At this point it's time to evaluate what they have, develop them into the roles that they fit into and move the prospects that don't fit for developed players before their value depreciates. If you don't exit the basement quickly and with purpose, you usually end up staying there for a while.

Doughty is no where close to Chelios, Bourque and Lidstrom in terms of ability though, he hasn't been getting better with age and he's got a top five cap hit.

Yet if either Kopitar or Doughty were taken off this roster, we'd be below the cap floor

Those contracts do nothing to hamper the Kings.

Helps if you watch hockey with your eyes open.

Drew had a Norris finalist caliber year. Shouldn't be in the conversation because the Kings tanked out, but for 3/4 of the year, the guy was as good as ever.
