Don't look now, Edmonton is 3rd last

There are 3 of the hottest teams in the league in that division. Teams play many of their games within their division. See how that works.
Sorry to break it to you but other than Calgary, all the teams in the Pacific actually has a losing record (reg + OT) against the East. You are fooling yourself if you actually think the playoff race in the West is tougher than the one in the East, the 9 point difference between the #2 wild card team of the 2 conferences, has less to do with a lack of competitive parity and more to do with the East's strong winning record against the Pacific division.

What's the next move for them? Can't sign any UFAs, no depth to trade for stars, no stars other than Drai to trade for depth. Prospect pool is uninspiring, development system is abysmal.

I genuinely don't see anything you can really do other than keep shuffling deck chairs until some of those ugly contracts run out.

it's never enough
it's because of Edmonton that a truly genuinely **** team like LA won't be guaranteed a 1st overall pick
so keep'em coming boys!
No it’s because of people whining about edmonton that last place isn’t guaranteed first / second overall.

If edmonton somehow gets first again they will probably change the odds again and it will somehow benefit the oilers in a couple years.

The second line in practice is Gagner-Malone-Rattie and you're surprised they're 3rd last?

Rocking the old one first line, three 4th line strategy? Bold move, seen my Bruins do it a few times this season to surprising success while half the roster was cold, thankfully a lot of the bottom 9 has begun scoring lol

The solution there isn't to punish every single last place team with bad odds, just make the odds decrease for every year in the past 5 that the team has picked top-3/5.

Absolutely embarrassing that they are in this position. At this point it’s literally not even fair that they’re going to get another high pick. It’s actually infuriating.. almost to the point that they should have some sort of thing in place to prevent a top 10 pick. Being the worst run franchise in the league for 15 years straight shouldn’t continue to be rewarded high end picks. Unbelievable.

It’s not like it’s enjoyable for oilers fans . Especially after chia completely screwed the team on his way out .

They are a great example about how a poorly run team can stay awful forever. Pure incompetence at its finest for a decade and they're rotten to the core.

The players should be embarrassed. This may not be a deep roster, but they’re better than almost last in the West. They have Connor freakin McDavid, Draisaitl, RNH and etc while a team like the Coyotes have nothing like that.

I watch this team play from time to time and they look like they feel sorry for themselves. They don’t work hard enough and they’ve quit on the team and themselves. They were sitting in a playoff position earlier in the season and they should be closer to 9th or 10th rather than 15th or 16th.

The Oilers do not deserve another top 5 pick. the rest of the league needs franchise players too. They need to stop sulking, stop feeling sorry and play with some damn pride for the fans that pay good money to attend the games

I am wondering if Seattle can quickly become better than the Oilers as well. That would be nuts.

You're right, it is pretty morbid. Oiler fans never asked for this, and we've trying to get proper change for a while. We don't want McDavid to be wasted. Maybe if you guys want to help, how about start voicing how **** our management is that the NHL will come in and do something about it. McDavid is an oiler, and with the right fixes, the team can be competitive. We just have to get rid of the rot of the upper management that have been shuffled into the back corners of the organization. Lowe, Howson, Green, Mactavish have failed in the past and they need be released with the bad mojo they have kept around for too long.

What?? Are you kidding me??

Bettman just told me at the All Star Game that the Oilers were in great shape and were one of the better run teams in the NHL!!

Pfft.....management is not the problem!!!

:popcorn eating:

Really is amazing that EDM will miss the playoffs for the 3rd time in Mcdavids 4 years. Crazy

Through no fault of his own. The year they made it Talbot was the reason.

McDavid is the poster boy for consistency. He’ll always get his 100 points.

The rest of the team......ugh. They are the ones on the hook for missing the playoffs.

And yes, I know those players were brought in by what can only be described as “an idiot”.

Says the opposite. It's harder to make the playoffs in the West, because it's so competitive.

How so? If he's saying that the Oilers being close to a playoff spot is an indication that the West is bad (based n their poor record yet still being close to the playoffs), how do you see the West as being "competitive"? The East has a 0.534 winning % vs the West while the West has a 0.466 winning % vs the East. 8 of the bottom 11 teams are in the West. That's over half the conference in the bottom third. As it stands today, a bottom third of the league team makes the playoffs in the West while 14th overall misses in the East.

False.

There can be a "winner" without there being a loser.
Maybe in grade school where they want all the little kids to feel like "winners", but not in professional sports. If someone wins, then someone else has to lose.

OT in hockey is NOT there to determine a winner or loser. It's there to hand out an additional point without actually having a loser.
So, when fans go home after a game that went into overtime, they don't think their team won or lost? Instead they think" the game ended in a tie, but we didn't get the additional point that was handed out afterwards"? When the results of the game are written in the media, the headline is not "Team X beat Team Y"? Sorry, but everyone knows that one team won and the other lost, but the NHL just decided to reward the losing team, too.

Football and baseball OT / Extra Innings is still played under the same parameters the sport is supposed to be played.

Have you ever watched an NCAA football overtime?

The West got off to a slower start. East came out on fire, and has cooled off.
