If the goal is to win a cup this year or next, than losing a late 1st round pick would hurt a lot less then losing Heinen or Grzelcyk imo.

Were in the 8th inning of bergy krejci and chara. Gotta go for it
If an inning is a year, I’d say that’s a pretty pessimistic outlook. That would end 37, 46 and 33’s career after next season. For Chara, maybe, as his contract has to be renewed before July 1.

But Bergy and Krejci look like they’re still going strong. Perhaps you see them differently.

As far as being a contender yes it's the 8th or 7 and two thirds. These guys aren't in their 20'S

Not in their 20’s? Well that’s news to me. Chara hasn’t been in his twenties for ten years now.
Still don’t see anything in their play that tells me they’re nearing the end.

Let's not get them help till their late 30s and test that theory. Good plan

I get your frustration. To say anything about spending these days as an excuse is foolish. We all know about the past.
Sorry I have just lived the whole Jacob's regime of terror and get a little prickly about JJ and the Montgomery Burns family

Mats Zuccarello might be available, and he surely would not cost a 1st round pick. Maybe something like 2nd + Cam Hughes. Experienced guy, still in his prime, playing for a new contract--could be a recipe for a torrid finish.

No way in **** that lands you Zuc.

You're seriously downplaying how good he actually is.

As it stands now, where in the first round is Boston's pick? Top 10? 20? The lower it is the more willing I'd be to part with it to get a winger for Krejci provided that winger is not a rental.

Here are the similar guys available:

Simmonds
Ferland
Zucarrelo
Silverberg
Nyqvist
Hayes
Brassard
Dzingle
Johansson

I'm sure there are others as well.

At some point the supply of guys outstrips the amount of 1st rounders. Nevermind that teams have other needs aside from wingers. Calgary, Columbus and NYI are also without 2nds so they're going to be loath to trade their firsts.

If you're the Bruins I think you hold the line because when it comes down to the deadline, those guys are going to go for whatever is on the table.

North Of The Border

"His work, however, is far from over. Boston’s youth movement has been impressive and much needed, but the aging core of Patrice Bergeron, Zdeno Chara and David Krejci cannot be overlooked. The Bruins’ window is beginning to close, and Sweeney has a duty to reap the benefits of these special players before their time is up."

I really feel Sweeney has been trying to fill this void, unfortunately its taking him awhile to do so. Time's been on his side and the Bruins are in a playoff position with him exploring his minor league options but the clock is ticking. Hopefully Sweeney lands a big fish, he most diffidently has the assets to do so.

Stone or a Duchene would be awesome, I believe if the Sens don't have a deal in the works by mid-February they will make a move with both of them, and the Bruins without question have the assets, that will tempt the Sens to make a move even within the division. If Sweeney is really serious about giving Bergy and company another shot at the Cup, this year and beyond, M.Stone should be behind door number one,two and three. With Duchene being a close second.

He would be a good pickup though, maybe throwing in a better prospect with a 2nd and a few other picks would get a conversation started. Gorton also seems to like talking to Don around the deadline.

This is who I hope the Bruins take a swing for. Give away some futures. Like other's have said, this is really the end of the line for this core. Not too many years left, and this was the plan starting a few years ago. Have the core hang on, stockpile some young guns, let them develop and then make a run. Zuccarello would be amazing on Krejci's wing and would give you two absolutely dangerous scoring lines. With the defense not looking too awful, that team could make a run even against teams like Tampa and SJ.

I'm 100% convinced that Zuccarello goes back to NYC after this season, though. I think the Rangers can get a bit for him, then he goes back to the Rags and they make him captain next year. He apparently loves it in NYC. You give the first as a starting point and from there, I don't think there is too much off the table that isn't on the current roster. Not like the Rags would want anything other than picks and prospects anyway.

As it turns out cutting ties from Spooner wasn't a mistake at all.

If I'm Sweeney I go for a big trade. 1st rounder + 2 prospects. Get someone that can stay here. Charlie's contract isn't going to be as big now. Heinen went from looking like he'd need 4m+ to looking like 1.25m. Chara may honestly retire. We're going to have money now. Go get a guy with some term and lock it down.

He's too old for the price he gets.
