An interesting, if not otherwise bland, article. I agree that you can't directly compare the NFL and NHL, however the CBA that exists in the NFL *could* almost map to the NHL, but the revenue sharing would also have to exist for it to work. (And is MLSE really going to give up all that money?)

Somewhat off topic, but I think it's interesting that of the NFL's players, all have at least 3 years of tertiary education (a requirement for draft-eligibility). Supposed arrangements and help aside, these players do sit through classes and take the tests just like every other student does. I wonder, how many of the NHLPA's brethren have tertiary education at all? I also wonder how many can actually understand the underlying financial/economic system in the NHL... The answer to both is likely not many.
