I don't know if it's thread worthy but with at least a week until meaningful games and the regular season drawing to a close, this thought popped into my head and I thought I might see what others think.

I hope so.

It's time to begin the tradition of franchise captaincy.

Offer it to Karlsson (or better: Schmidt!) in contract negotiations.

Engelland has been the defacto captain taking a lot of ceremonial faceoffs.

But, yes, I think there should be a captain.

Usually it's a decision of the GM and/or coaching staff IF there's a captain and who that man is. IIRC there was something said that captain would be coming for 18-19 season.

Does Karlsson seem too shy and quiet for the role?

I imagine if we get the other Karlsson or Tavares that they would get it right away?

I wouldn't have minded if they gave it to Engelland in the first place really. Pretty cool story being connected to Vegas.

Re-sign Perron.
Make Perron captain.
Make Bellemare Alternate

Or just do the same thing as this year.

  • Schmidt leads all in ice time and is a lively joker in the change room.
  • Perron sure looks like the leader on the ice and is a respected veteran.
  • Signing a Tavares sounds like a natural choice, but his salary would ceiling us, crippling player development and future contract talks.
  • Any of the above works for me.
  • Engelland would be a blue-collar worker type of leader. Apt but am not thrilled about it.
  • Bellemare by no means. Please no.

Usually captain has more gravitas than comedy personality in that role.

The latter is needed to keep the room lose, but can they also lead when serious? Perhaps more as lieutenant/alternate.

And just because a guy has the offensive leadership may not mean he's the best candidate for captain. How much energy/attention required away from offense to lead?

Delicate balance.

Maybe they will wait another year. I mean there is a strong possibility that they're trading for a certain defenseman that's captain of another team...

I might give it to someone 30 and over just so the C can pass to one of the prospects some day. Assuming they don't get traded for Karlsson.
