Does anyone still think Marner is better than Matthews?

Mitch: 1.50g/60 (#100), 4.59p1/60 (#12), 7.12p/60 (#5)

If they were both wingers it would be close, but I'd still take Auston.

But given he's a C, it's an easy call.

I said this before and I will say it again. It's okay to say that Matthews is a better player than Marner because there is nothing wrong with that. However Marner is also a great player and if Matthews was not on the team, it's possible Marner is the Leafs best player.

Although I think as Leafs we should be happy both are playing for Toronto and why should we put them against each other?

Matty looks great on those stats through 60.. but he's proven he doesn't have the endurance to play much more than he does..

Ie game 7 vs the Bruins. He short shifted himself not Babs losing a massive amount of ice time.

In last years Game 7 against Boston Matthews played only 18:48 total ice time, so that was due to Babcock's constant line matching no matter the situation. Even though Boston made it 3-1 at the 2:40 mark of the 3rd period, the Leafs still had a chance and in the end Babcock not willing to change his coaching methods is what cost them. The Bruins 4th goal into an empty net did not happen until the 17:26 mark.

This is false.
I'm sure the reason for this was his increased ice time after Sheldon Keefe took over, because Matthews total ice this past season was 20:58 and here was those numbers in his first 3 seasons with Babcock.

2016-17 season: 17:38

2017-18 season: 18:08

2018-19 season: 18:33

So it took the firing of Babcock to get Matthews total ice above 20:00 minutes.

Would also add Willie becoming a great player is a good thing for the Leafs too.
It is fun to debate but to have literally division among fans as to who is the better Leafs is a bit ridiculous.

I completely agree that Nylander was a great player this past season and he proved all those doubters wrong since he only had 27 points during the 2018-19 season.

It is also ridiculous that some Leafs fans debate who's better and we can not enjoy them all playing on the same team.

This debate would be similar to choosing who the better player was between Sundin and Gilmour. Big man vs smaller man.
Before you jump all over me about Dougie being a center MM a winger. MM is a center playing the wing......he is the line driver!
If the Leafs didn't have AM, MM would be a center and may still be one down the line. Same goes for Willie. The Leafs are truly blessed with this core.......now bring it on home!

When Marner was still playing for the London Knights and was on that line with Matthew Tkachuk and Christian Dvorak, was he the Centre or a Winger?

Matthews... That being said, assuming both are life-Leafers, Marner will likely have a handful of season where he's better than Matthews (not necessarily by a significant margin).

So you don't include the 2017-18 and 2018-19 seasons when Marner outscored Matthews in points, because Matthews only played in 62 and 68 games due to injury?

I didn't want to get into that argument but I was thinking last year for sure was the case ... Matthews injuries didn't help though.

Not that it matters at all .. I don't understand the fanbases general idea of pitting players against each other in terms of who is better. It's bloody stupid.

I have said multiples times that as Leafs fans we should be happy having Matthews and Marner playing on the same team.

Do Oilers fans have thread like Who is better Drai or McDavid? The have posts like Oilers should trade one of them to get more depth.....
I haven't read any posts on their board, however why would they even debate who trade between McDavid and Draisaitl? The obvious answer is you keep McDavid because he's the best player in the NHL today, so that means they trade Draisaitl for more depth. Never mind the fact his contract would be easier to trade since it's $8.5 million AAV compared to McDavid's $12.5 million AAV.

According to Leafs nation logic. You trade McDavid as he is not 4mil better than Drai. Plus you get a bigger and better package. Plus sooner or later McDavid will slow down but Drai’s style will age better.....Lol

Despite how great Matthews and Marner have played for Toronto and this is no way me giving them criticism based on their play, the truth is McDavid and Draisaitl have been better.

Since Sheldon Keefe became their coach he finally put Matthews and Marner on the same line together at 5v5 which is what they wanted. McDavid and Draisaitl have played on the same line together a lot longer, so I'm sure that helps when they both finish 1 and 2 total points.
