When you get a chance to lock up a franchise player, you do it.

I feel bad for most of the rest of the NL West (not you, Giants). The Dodgers are basically the 90's Braves all over again at this point.

Wowza, how about having 2 MVP’s on your team.
Bellinger and Betts.

It's more common than you might think:

Pirates, Stargell and Parker, 1978-1980
Brewers, Fingers and Yount, 1981-1982
Athletics, Canseco and Henderson, 1990-1992, plus Eckersley in 1992
Rangers, Gonzalez and Rodriguez, 1996-1999
Giants, Bonds and Kent, 2000-2002
Phillies, Rollins and Howard, 2006-2014
Tigers, Verlander and Cabrera, 2011-2016

The Big Red Machine was also a mess (Bench, Rose, Morgan, and Foster won six MVPs between 1970 and 1977).

Yeah, some of these MVPs were undeserved (Stargell in 1979, Rollie Fingers, Howard) but in most of these cases these players were good or great players who played well together for at least a year or two.

Yeah, Buehler’s the ace. I think Kershaw will be fine as long as Roberts doesn’t rely on him to be an reliever in emergency situations in the playoffs.

Good for Dodgers but they will never win with Kershaw as ace of staff

The guy simply falls apart when it matters most

Kershaw has had multiple good postseason series, including in critical moments. Heck, two of his three appearances in 2017 against the cheating Astros were excellent - its just the Dodgers couldn't score in the last of the three.

What you're saying sounds a lot like what they used to say about Randy Johnson, before the 2001 postseason anyway. Good pitchers are good pitchers.

I’m just waiting or John Henry to have Shaugnessy or one of his cronies at the Globe right a story with the headline “Is Betts really worth 300+million?” or “Dodgers kill long term chances at winning with Betts deal”

Also had no idea until today that Friedman hasn’t given out a contract to one of his own guys worth over $100 million except for Kersh and now Betts. Even his most expensive free agent deal was Pollock. That’s some good fiscal responsibility.

Buehler’s the ace on their staff now, Kershaw
Is delegated to second or third in the pitching order. Kershaw is on his last stance, he’s bound for Cooperstown all he needs is a ring plus a few more wins/strikeouts.

Howard's MVP isn't that undeserving...

58 HR, 149 RBI, an OPS of 1.08

Eckersley's '92 MVP, for example, really stands out much more as a truly undeserving selection
