NBC broadcasts were already bad and I think losing Doc is going to make them worse. I hope Eddie Olczyk retires next because he is atrocious.

He can never stop his Chicago homerism while on national broadcasts. He shouldn't be allowed to commentate during games Chicago is playing in for national broadcasts.

He can't separate his local gig from his national gig.
I always picture him sitting in the booth in a Blackhawks sweater as he calls game. It makes his blatant homerism slightly less annoying and a little humorous.

Having him call Blackhawks games is like letting Mickey Redmond call nationally televised Wings games. And even then at least Mick would complain about the refs no matter which way the calls went.

I enjoyed listening to him. It was definitely never boring. I hope that he enjoys his retirement.

I take it I’m not the only one is happy at his retirement then? Please tell me his replacement won’t be so biased and more interesting

To appreciate Doc Emeric I take you back 24 years to the final minutes of Game 3 of the 1996 World Cup in Montreal.

The game in the US was seen on a thrown together network of RSN's in the major hockey markets.

It's all sports and it's very weird.
I'd have to say tho NHL fans are beyond bad. Like as if the game revoles around their favorite commentator. And like hockey is my favorite sport in the whole wide world (northern Minny) But its just the way people apply this nonsense just drives me bonkers

There have been some great announcers over the years and the Hockey Hall of Fame has honored most of them

The first 4 honored were truly the Mount Rushmore of hockey announcers.

Congrats on a great career Doc, dont listen to these haters and whiners. You put excitement into the game, something guys like Jim Hughson could learn from. All the best

I don't think pointing out what people dislike about Emrick as an announcer is hating or whining. I don't like him AS AN ANNOUNCER because I think the jargon he uses is simply ridiculous - he knifed the puck, they infiltrated the zone, the goalie's paraphernalia (do you mean equipment), the waffle board, etc. Watching back in the 80s he did not use these terms. Actually, NOBODY used these terms. Just use commonly accepted terminology. Also, I find his voice incredibly annoying, just personal taste I know. If longevity is a main criteria then Emrick deserves to be in the HOF, but IMO that would be the only reason.

I liked Doc, but funny you mention that since he was the only announcer I ever heard using the term "Shovel shot!".

I’ve hardly ever heard Emrick talk about himself but I’m watching an interview on NHL Network and he seems like a really great guy.

Always liked his enthusiasm. Seemed like he was as much a fan of the game as he was the play by play announcer.

I think it’s difficult for serious partisan fans to enjoy national broadcast teams because it’s their job to upsell rivalries and conflict and sometimes that involves dumping on our favorite teams.

Congrats to Emrick for a great career. Thoroughly enjoyed his announcing except for the corniness at times. He had his own style. Admittedly though I was growing tired of the broadcast team of Emrick, McGuire and Olczyk.

And congrats to Kenny Albert. I like his style too. Emrick is legendary but there are some good ones out there to carry on the torch.

Enjoy retirement Doc - you certainly have earned it.

Doc was fine as a regional announcer and as 1 of several voices during the 90s.

He shouldn’t have been elevated to being the “voice of the NHL” and certainly not for such a long time. We missed a lot of would-be classic calls because of his... style, I guess you could call it.

I give him the respect due to a long term institution, but it’s refreshing to think of the big national broadcasts having a more refined voice in the future.
