Do you see Gretzky’s ASSIST record ever being broken?

Will the assist record be broken?

There’s been a ton of focus on the magic number of 894 (goals record) and for obvious reasons, but what about the assist record? I’ve never heard anyone even broach this subject so I thought I would.

Do you see anyone breaking Gretzky’s assist record, which stands at 1,963 assists?

Would McDavid be a likely candidate?

Only Orr and Lemieux have ever reached 100 assists in a year outside of Gretzky, and they only did it once each and in a higher scoring era than today.

To do 1963 assists you'd have to hit 100+ assists 19 years in a row.

McDavids career likely wont even last 19 seasons, as hed be like 38 then. Gretzky retired then

So to beat it he'd have to play at a level above peak Orr and peak Lemieux, but in a lower scoring era - and he'd have to do it 19 seasons in a row.

If McDavid plays until he's 38 (same age as Gretzky) he would need to average 113 assists per season going forward. If he plays until he's 45 he would need to average 77. McDavid's career high is 75. Just reaching 1964 points would be a herculean task. McDavid would need to average 100 points per season for 15 straight seasons after this.

Never. The fact he had multiple seasons of 100+ assists make it near impossible. Nowadays, even good playmakers struggle to top 60 assists. So essentially just to match one of Gretzky's 100+ assist seasons, it would take them 2 seasons to do it.
