Line Combos: Do we really have cap issues?

I don’t think Barrie is getting full term. Maybe 6 years max, *most* GMs are starting to come around on these max deals and that term is a killer.

I hope we can retain him, but Dubas has to be careful here. Barrie isn’t exactly old but he isn’t a spring chicken anymore either. 1 year into new contract and he is 30 years old and a lot of his game revolves around his pace and skating ability.

I don't understand the angst? There is a full year to go.

Remember the angst of no cap space, and having to get rid of Marleau and Zaitsev?

But that also cost Gardiner, Brown, Kadri, Hainsey and a first round pick. There is always a price to pay.

Well, you weren't improving your roster by not moving pieces out. And Gardiner/Hainsey are UFA, so that's no "price", they weren't part of the equation anyway, and the Leafs were still cap strapped with huge holes without them.

After this season, no.

The only really pressing matter is Andersen being eligible for an extension next summer.

(Rielly isn't walking after 2022)

Muzzy will not be an issue to re-sign. His wife and family want him to finish up a Leaf. This is why I like local guys who dreamt of playing for the Leafs as kids.

Next year you need to keep the expansion draft in mind. Protecting Rielly, Barrie, Muzzin, Dermott will mean you lose either one of Kapanen or Johnsson or need to send Seattle something to not take them. I know it is a good problem to have, but re-signing Muzzin can result in losing Kapanen for free...

7-3-1 for protected players. Seven forwards: Looking at the current forwards MM, Willie, JT, AM, Kerfoot, Kap, AJ, and Hyman are the keepers but Hyman's deal will be expired, and Bracco and Mekheyev, will be exempt.

Three D men: I don't think they resign Barrie, but if so they protect him, Rielly and Muzzen with Ceci being the odd man out. Muzzen will be looking at a NM as will Barrie if they re-up. and I don't think the club will want all NM clauses in their top 4 which is one of the reasons they won't resign Barrie. Of course if Muzzen has a bad year, Ceci becomes a beast, or a Marlie storms onto the scene the mix might change.

I like it but its a risk and unlikely we will have zero players in the press box.

i am not sure you have it right.

IIRC first/2nd year "pros" are exempt

littlegrin has 2 years of AHL "pro" already

Sandin/Bracco 1 each

and there are 2 seasons of "pro" hockey to play before the Xdraft

Below is from the Vegas rules but they are supposed to be unchanged.

Prospects
All players with fewer than three years of professional experience are automatically exempt from selection. This also includes unsigned draft picks, and signed players that have yet to play a game.
A year of professional experience is 10 professional games played under a NHL contract, including regular season and playoffs. For players who are aged 18 or 19* (on Sept. 15th of a given season), those specifically have to be NHL games. Everybody else it can be any league, as long as it’s under an NHL contract.

*The exception is a “19-year-old” player who turns 20 between September 16th and December 31st, and signed their first contract that same calendar year. For those players all games under an NHL contract count, no matter what league.

So Lilly was 19 on September 15th of last year and played no NHL games, meaning his 18-19 year wasn't included in the pro accrual. He will have 2 years and Sandin 1 year.

Bracco will have more than 3 years pro so he will have to be protected. But the team does have two full seasons to assess him as either a replacement for an existing winger or not so he won't be a lost asset. Worst case is he is probably dealt before the X draft. If he actually looks good enough to unseat one of the vets that would be a home run.

NOT any more. The days of the Leafs cap issues are gone.

Thanks Dubas!

Leafs cap issue question will really boil own to one single question and that is can a team pay 4 Forwards ~ 1/2 its total cap space and still ice a cup competitive team?

This is what will be tested this year based on Leafs on ice results not the ability to simply get 23 players on a roster and cap compliant.

The following year Leafs currently have only Rielly under contract and all of Barrie, Muzzin, Ceci are all UFAs and Dermott at RFA without contracts. So Dubas will need to sign at minimum 5 dmen for the 2020-21 season.

You don't think any of Liljegren/Sandin are ready by the 2020/21 season?

They might and we hope they will become successful NHLers down the road, but I was only referring to the current NHL roster for this year, which I don't believe either are being considered.

Leafs might want to stagger their NHL arrival to remain competitive so one in 2020-21 and the other in 2021-22 so they don't have 2 rookie Dmen on the defense.

I agree with the development plan, as I personally would like to see both start the year in the AHL. That being said, I'd like both to get the Dermott treatment where Lil is brought up this year (late in the year) and sticks around for the playoffs. Repeat the same process with Sandin the year after.
