Proposal: Do we go after Karlsson & Panarin next July if they become UFAs?

Yes to EK, as I could see him contributing meaningfully even at 40, barring major injuries. I’d pass in Panarin; the efficiency of his playing style is age-sensitive.

Depends on how the season goes. We might not have enough data yet. If a lot of the big prospects take a step back, we're like the 2nd worst team in the league but we only get the 5OA pick and our best NHL player is Spooner or Namestnikov, we're a long way away and we have to bunker down. No one is talking about this but it's extremely possible!

If the kids look good and we get a sure thing like Jack Hughes, swing for the fences.

it all depends on how this year goes....how many of the youngsters are in the nhl by the end of the season or likely to be nhl ready next season? also depends on who we get in next years draft...I think in a perfect world we'll be ready to make a big move to launch as forward but lots has to happen with the young players to put us into that position.

He won't make it there, but in a way he is already one. He can strong arm his way to any team he wants to by saying he won't sign for X, Y, Z when those teams approach him pre-trade.

No question. Though, they will not be available on the market come July 1st 2019.

Tank for Hughes. Trade Zucc and probably Hayes for two more 1st round picks+good young assets. Trade Smith. Buyout Staal. Sign Panarin and Karlsson for 8 and 11 mil.

No to EK. Can't we tell by how bad the Sens were this year that this guy can't do it by himself? If the Sens are floundering with him, we will too. We need to stop looking in the rear view mirror and look forward. Paying EK 11M for 7 or 8 years is like jumping into the middle of the ocean with a safe shackled to your ankle. Time it all. Let it play out. Keep the flexibility, keep the cap low. The Leafs are going to have a surge, the Penguins are going to flare out, OV can't play forever. Set yourself up for your time. We need to go through about two more cycles of trading off guys who are due for big paydays for futures. By then the above scenarios have revealed themselves and this team has a direction and plan to move forward. Don't panic and don't lose focus.

As others have said, it comes down to what shakes out throughout 2018-19. If you see the trends and improvements that you want in our recently drafted guys, Pionk cements himself as a steady defender, you know what CK is looking for on his next contract, you add another top 10/top 5 pick, Shesty comes over, then yeah, go and get a top line player that will compliment what you are building.
If there's still a lot of question marks and you are unsure of what you'd be surrounding the FA with, then don't bother because you'd just be wasting them and potentially stretching out the rebuild even further.

You could add Seguin to the title as well but I doubt he'll hit FA
