Dion Phaneuf contract talk: Twitter, THN, TheStar links

I'm guessing that any signing of Phaneuf would take place later rather than sooner to allow the club more time to gauge what the cap situation could be next year. Kessel was a priority signing...Phaneuf much less so.

Kessel was a priority because he wasn't going to negotiate in season. Phaneuf is very much a priority signing, and he's willing to negotiate during the season. So there's still time.

Im sorry I dont mind paying for Kessel at a premium but if Seabrook and Keith get under 6 million so should Phaneuf 8x5.5million

You do realize Keith signed his 13-year contract pre-CBA, thus lowering his cap hit?

Both Seabrook and Keith signed those deals as RFAs a few years ago.

They aren't comparable contracts.

I'm not expecting Phaneuf for any less than 6.5.

...and Seabrook signed his contract when he still had a few RFA years left, he wasn't UFA.

Brent Seabrook signed his contract as a RFA, not as a UFA, so it is not the same situation. Keith's contract is a 13 year backdiving contract. Also not the same situation.

I would be happy if Phaneuf would take 6.5 but i'd got a little higher if necessary.

I agree completely with this.In fact I wonder how enthusiastic Leaf management is in signing Phaneuf. After signing Kessel and even assuming an increase in the cap the Leafs will not have much flexibility unless they choose not to sign some of next years FA's. That leaves little room for a raise for Kessel and Franson, Raymond and others..Some have suggested there will be flexibility next year in the Leaf cap situation but frankly I don't know where that flexibility will come from. Maybe I'm missing something....:(

Seems to me like Phaneuf will come in at $6.5M, the Leafs will come in at $5.5M, and they'll meet in the middle at $6.0M.

Everyone thinking that Dion won't budge from $6.5M, nobody goes into a negotiation without budging from their initial demand.

Just like Nonis said on Hockey Central, $8M wasn't the starting point of the Kessel negotiation

Keith is getting nearly $40 million in the first 4 years of that back diving contract.... Seabrooks paid him $9 million a year the first two years, as a RFA.

I'm expecting Phaneuf to get a Kris Letang type deal who set the market for a top end UFA bound Dman with an 8 year x 7.25 per year contract.

Hopefully though Dion takes just a bit less than the max for what he could get like Kessel took a bit less than what Perry (8.625 per year) got.

I think your right Phanuef should get 6-8 years 7-7.25 per year.

I'm going to say Phaneuf will either get around 7-7.5 mill for 5 years or 6-6.5 for 8.

I can see a deal here cap-wise. Term might be an issue. Leafs would want 5yrs. or less, Dion would want 8 yrs. 6 yrs might work.

How funny is it that because Phaneuf is hated by the rest of the league he will most likely take a paycut. 6.5/yr would be awesome for this guy. Underrated imo.

Sorry but Keith's deal is your typical front-loaded deal.

He's making ~58M in his first 8 years. That's a cap hit of 7.25M.

I see Dion getting 7M for 6years. I would be happy with that.

Im a Dion fan but do you save his 6.5 million along with say a 5 million cap increase and sprinkle that amongst Bolland, McClement, Fraser, Ranger, Kumelin being UFAs and Gardiner, Franson and Reimer being RFA's. Tough call.
