Next up for Toronto is captain Dion Phaneuf, also UFA after season. Talks haven't begun yet on that front but source said should begin soon

That's unfortunate.... I was hoping we could get him for 5.5-6M, I don't want to see my favorite Leaf go.

6.5 x 8 is tough when you consider that he'll be 37 at the end of it.

Phaneuf may not tops of the list when it comes to Dmen in the league but that Leafs roster would suffer a huge blow without him (unless they somehow came by an equal or better option via trade or FA - which is unlikely). I just don't like that cap hit for him and it doesn't make me excited to think that more money might have to be tacked on for him to stay.

The sad thing is we can't let him walk. For all his blunders, his points to hits to blocks ratio will be hard to replace.

I'm expecting Phaneuf to get a Kris Letang type deal who set the market for a top end UFA bound Dman with an 8 year x 7.25 per year contract.

Hopefully though Dion takes just a bit less than the max for what he could get like Kessel took a bit less than what Perry (8.625 per year) got.

I actually think Dion would be wise to take a slight cut in pay, it would do wonders in terms of perception and/or criticism. Never happen, but...

Take 7/8 years... 7, 7, 6.5, 6.5, 6, 5, 4, /4

gets paid for what we know he can do for the next bunch of years, stays on extra but at a reduced price!

I offer to drive him to the airport

I offer to put you on a rocketship to Mars.

On another note, anyone suggesting that Phaneuf take less than what he's currently making shouldn't be allowed near a computer, and should promptly check themselves into the nearest rehab facility.

Phaneuf's salary (not cap hit) per year from 2008-2014:

08/09 - 7.0
09/10 - 6.5 (traded to Toronto after 55 GP)
10/11 - 7
11/12 - 6.5
12/13 - 6.5
13/14 - 5.5

6.5 AAV

I'd give him $6.5-7 million for 4-6 years but if he wants 7/8 years, which he will, I would be skeptical to go above $6-6.5 million. I think Phaneuf will decline significantly by 35, let alone 37.

I'm guessing that any signing of Phaneuf would take place later rather than sooner to allow the club more time to gauge what the cap situation could be next year. Kessel was a priority signing...Phaneuf much less so.
