Reading Kyle Woodlief's latest Redline Report in USA today he mentions that many NHL teams could be interested in a Seniorforward at BROWN University, HARRY ZOLNIERCZYK ( LW/C) age 23 this summer, in the college free agent swepstakes. Woodlief gushes that he is built for the pro game (though listed only at 5'11,183) --who is relentless all over the ice and always out works opponents, who also can score (he is averaging nearly 1.3 Points per game this year ( 11g,12a in 18GP)...goes to the tough areas AND is a terrific PK guy..

One thing Woodlief fails to mention however is that ZOLNIERCZYK when he was 20 was senteced to 3 years conditional probation...Now obviously he has been an exemplary college student-athlete at Brown
for several years now and probably matured past his youthful indiscretion -still doy you think NHL teams would forgive and forget what he was charged wth at 20, OR not go near himwith a ten foot pole due to the PR problems its presents with their "family" marketing?

This story willbe fascinating to watch this summer to see whether any team is so greedy fora good hockey player that it willtry to assuage any bad PR ... THEN if he does get signed, how will that team's ans welcome him? Probably very wll IF he proves a significant addition to their team... what's past is past as long as we win --etc.. STILl WILL HE GET THAT CHANCE? Many top team excecutives probably do not want any reference to porn charges tainting the purity and wholesomeness of the product they are trying to promote to kids and their families.
Is there an AL Davis in the NHL though? THAT willbe interesting-to see who if any pursue and sign this guy.

Harrison Zolnierczyk, a Freshman forward on the men's ice hockey team, is facing charges in Canada in connection with accusations that he produced, recorded and distributed a pornographic video involving a teenage girl on YouTube, the Providence Journal and Canwest News Service, a Canadian wire service, have reported.

"She told police she believed that she had been recorded while having a consensual sex act with [co-accused] Brad Harding, and that people had viewed it," Baines told court.

According to the Crown, the video itself was recorded in Harding's bedroom, at the home of his billet family in November 2006, by a webcam mounted on his computer.

The webcam, in turn, broadcast the images to Zolnierczyk's computer.

Baines said it is believed the video was played for members of the hockey club, but the images might not have come to light but for the windstorm of Dec. 11, 2006, which left the two players stranded at the home of three women in Nanaimo for the night.

In a fateful decision, Zolnierczyk logged onto the secure PhotoBucket (not YouTube, as previously believed) website and played the video for the three women. Despite pressure from members of the hockey team, the witnesses, friends of the victim, eventually recounted the incident to RCMP.

On Feb. 14, 2007, with Harding already talking to police, Zolnierczyk was arrested and interviewed by RCMP.

Teenagers + internet = bad times

I'm sure teams are well aware of the incident. The question will be whether it was a stupid decision rather than a pattern of something worse.

Why would he mention this?
The number of hockey people that would not be familar with this would be ZERO.

Uh, whoa. What Zolnierczyk did was deplorable, but it's also completely different from him having pornographic pictures of "little girls". Get your facts straight:

PORT ALBERNI - A popular former member of the Junior A Alberni Valley Bulldogs has been given a three-year conditional discharge for his part in the production and distribution of a pornographic video involving an underage girl.

Harrison (Harry) Zolnierczyk was sentenced on Friday in Port Alberni provincial court before Judge Douglas Cowling. Zolnierczyk had previously entered guilty pleas on one count each of secretly recording sexual activity and making available voyeuristic recordings.

The victim, whose identity is protected by a publication ban, first went to police on Feb. 5, 2007.

She told police she believed that she had been recorded while having sex act with (then boyfriend) Brad Harding, and that people had viewed it.

I apologize for implying a different kind of porn picture distribution--I guess underage sex act is not showing pics of little girls-STILL it does stillcarry some stigma that some NHL clubs will want to avoid in presenting a wholesome "family" association with their team-anything that taints that image could be something they just do not want brought out.So they might avoid signing him in fear it always would come up again and again. Other clubs may be more tolerant of his youthful indescretion in putting up that video ..

Sorry, this isn't a case of a dumb teenager or "boys will be boys". He set up a web cam to record having sex with a teenager without her consent, then distributed the recording to several people. He knowingly violated her trust and the law.

Not to mention the fact that he was 20 years old. If he was 12 or 13, then it would be a different story, but the fact is he is a rational adult that should be accountable for his actions.

Considering the fact that players are the face of a hockey organization, I wouldn't this person anywhere near my team.

What he did is obviously awful, but the incident would have taken place within 2 months of his 19th birthday. The boyfriend involved in this, Brad Harding, is actually older than Zolnierczyk. This isn't to defend him, just to get the actual facts out there.

Edit: That said, I'd imagine that NHL GMs would be hesitant.

So? At 18 you are legally an adult. The bottom line is that he was fully aware of what he was doing.

This is obviously a good kid/guy who made a mistake. He is the captain of Brown so obviously he has grown up a lot. I really don't see NHL GM's being too hesitant if this guy is in fact the real deal.

It's not even close to an issue. Teams have signed players that have done worse things in more recent history. Plus, it's sad to say, but that type of behavior isn't exactly unheard of in the world of junior hockey.

So a girl's boyfriend recorded himself having sex with his girlfriend, then sent the video to Zolnierczyk's computer. Zolnierzcyk stored it on a private photobucket account and showed it to his teammates (allegedly) and 3 girls.

Completely agreed. It's bad, but I was expecting much worse.

As another poster mentioned, "Dirty Harry" would be a great nickname for this guy.

Alot of the scouts are there to see Jack MacLellan.

http://www.hockeydb.com/ihdb/stats/csl.php?tid=548

“Our best player, night in and night out,†says Whittet, who, like most everyone else in the U.S. hockey world, is wowed by Jack Maclellan’s offensive output this winter. “Our most complete player, our most skilled player, our most diligent guy. A competitor, a fierce competitor. He’s a coach’s dream. A creative guy, a wizard with the puck, sees the ice very, very well.

“A hell of a player and a wonderful kid.â€

"This transformation occurred in a hurry. Nearly as quickly, National Hockey League bird-dogs have picked up the scent.

“Well, Jack’s got a lot of interest,†Whittet says. “Not a lot of guys have his skill-set. He’s an elite-level player, in terms of that skill . . . and there is a lot of buzz about him because he is (an NHL) free agent. A pretty hot commodity. I’m hearing different things around the rink.

“There may be some teams that would like him to leave (college before graduating). It’ll be interesting to see what happens, post-season, in terms of what angles the pro guys may be taking.â€

Maclellan is happy to hear that his sterling play is dragging big-league scouts to the eastern side of the continent. But that, he swears, was never the intent."
