Did NHL teams have the same player limits as they do now back in the 70’s and 80’s??

Very interested in old time hockey (60’s/70’s)

Did the NHL teams have the same type of limits they have now? Like only 50 contracts allowed to be signed or the 90 player list teams are allowed to have??

Or was it just a free for all and teams held any amount of players?
