Toews was born to play Bednar’s system. Can’t imagine he would have this same success playing the NYI gamestyle

Two assists tonight to lift him to 20a and 30p groups.

Avs have had to play him more than they would like to due to injuries. Toews being able to play in all situations pushed his minutes up.

    EJ missed 51 games.
    Byram missed 36 games.
    Makar missed 12 games.
    Girard missed 8 games.

Finishes regular season with the best +/- among all d-men in NHL.

Well, even within them. I'd love to see some stat how Toews ranked in games among Colorado d-men to get better numbers, but let's take tonight's game against Kings:

Girard: 23:00 of which 1:21 PK time.
Makar: 25:27 of which 0:58 PK time.
Toews: 26:11 of which 2:00 PK time.

Among all Avalanche players in this game, this is the top-5 of penalty killing time on ice:
    1) Toews 2:00
    2) Girard 1:21
    3) Makar-Newhook-Donskoi 0:58 (side node: Seriously? Newhook? Wow.)
and for example Patrik Nemeth: 0:19.

Tell me, how I'm supposed to see the role of Toews? Because with this kind of numbers, this seems to me like he's Bednar's #1 guy especially outside of powerplay.

Over 51 minutes playing time, two points, no penalties, +4 (leads d-men in NHL) so far in playoffs.

Toews among d-men in playoffs so far:
    T-3rd in assists and points
    T-1st in +/-
7th in TOI (only Darnell Nurse above him has _not_ played OT games).

@Freudian stated that Avs have needed to play Toews "more than they would like to due to injuries".
After two playoff games, both with the same six d-men:
Toews has 51:47 of ice time which of 9:49 on penalty kill.
Makar has 45:22 of ice time which of 4:11 on penalty kill.
Girard has 45:08 of ice time which of 5:14 on penalty kill.
So Toews plays more PK than Makar and Girard combined and all-in-all, over three minutes more per game than either of them.

5v5 Makar, Toews and Girard have very similar toi, as well as actual shifts. Girard has had 55 shifts, Toews has had 54 and Makar 51. Toews has been out there for a couple extended shifts between the two games.

Not trying to take anything away from Toews. He's been great. But the Avs absolutely played him and Girard more than they usually do while Makar was out. Not sure how that's controversial.

Toews is roughly top-10 in ice time in NHL regardless of who Avalanche has on their roster healthy - ok, even higher than that if players are not healthy. But that ~top-10 is "the minimum usage".

Great playmaking in the 0-1 goal against Vegas. So far in five playoff games 0+3, +8 rating, leads Avs clearly in ice-time and zero penalty minutes.

If Avs win the cup, Toews would be the best free agent signing in franchise history

Well, it's not that our record when it comes to FAs is really stellar. The best are probably Anderson, Brunnette, and Hejda, which is quite depressing.

Toews was traded to the Avs and was a RFA. Still the best piece of business during the offseason.

Last night in a 3-2 loss
    - an assist
    - +2 as only player from either team
    - most takeaways most from either team
    - played the most from either team.

    Leads NHL with a +9.

As an Islanders fan it is fascinating to see him doing so well DEFENSIVELY. He was always great offensively and has tremendous wheels but none of us saw this coming. Good for him.

Though it sucks that we basically had to trade him but thank god it was to the western conference!

    Finishes playoff-season with
+/- rating of +10, the most outside of final four NHL teams. As comparison, Montreal Canadiens leader is Joel Armia with +4.

Ice time of 25:25 which is over a minute more per game than anyone else in Colorado.

1+5=6 points, which is the second most among Colorado d-men.

The Avs got beat four straight. Their smaller D were exposed.

He was tremendous. As was Makar. Girard unfortunately was the opposite.

You're mean like Samuel Girard and Patrik Nemeth?
