For those of you old enough to remember Gordon Lightfoot, I give you a parody in honor of tonight's game.
The Wreck of the Thomas Fitzgerald
The legend lives on from the Meadowlands on down
to the big rink they call Prudential Center.
The NHL, it is said, never gives up her dead
When a team goes winless 'til November
But the goals against, galore
26,000 goals more than what Thomas Fitzgerald guessed early
That good team and true was a bone to be chewed
When the games of October went poorly.
The team was the pride of the Jersey side
Comin' back from some game against Florida
As the NHL teams go, they were younger than most
With two 1st overall picks, unseasoned.
Concluding contract terms with a couple o' Hall's firms
When they left fully loaded for practice
And later that night when the puck drop rang,
could it be the north wind they'd be feelin'?
The hot wind from Hynes made a tattle-tale sound
as the players went over the railing.
And every fan knew, and the players did too
T'was the bitches from Broadway come stealin'.
The goals came late and the time-out had to wait
When the penalties from Palmieri were slashin'
When intermission came it was freezin' pain
In the face of a Hurricanes division win.
When intermission time came Cangialosi came on deck sayin'
Fellas, it's too rough to interview ya.
At 8:30 pm Chico Resch came on in sayin'
Hynesie, it's been good to know ya!
Fitzgerald wired in, he had soft goals comin' in
And the good team and true was in peril.
By the end of the night, their goal lights went outta site,
In the wreck of the Thomas Fitzgerald.
Does anyone know where the love of God goes,
When the games turn the minutes to hours?
The pundits all say they'd have made it ok,
If they'd put fifteen more goals behind 'em
They might be split up or they might just capsize
They might have another game slaughter.
And all the remains are the headlines and the names
and the memories of the off-season banter!
On a musty ol' board on HF, they prayed
In the Metropolitan division section
The church bell chimed 'till it rang twenty-seven times
For each goal against the New Jersey Devils
The legend lives on from the Meadowlands on down
to the big rink the call Prudential Center
The NHL, it is said, never gives up her dead
When the goals of November come early!
