also the way he's been moving the puck on zone exits. When he's back there, and the puck moves to his corner, we don't get trapped very often. That to me is the most impressive thing. Much better than Andy Greene on his last legs, who is the one he replaced.I don’t know how good he actually is, but he’s been tremendous in the games he’s played so far.
In 9 games playing 19:10 a night, 1 goal 3 assists, +7, 15 shots, 19 hits, 16 blocked shots, 5 CF% rel.
he is still creating some, it just isn’t going in. A night off won’t kill him though because he just seems frustrated to me.
I think he looks worse at wing as well.
"A disaster." You guys and your hyperbole
Please no more Carrick or Claesson after this year. And enough of Mueller too.
I don’t have much faith in Mermis being good, but he’s been good enough so far that I’d give him a look over these other three idiots.
Carrick is the ultimate journeyman, Claesson has no ceiling and is basically Carrick without all the changing of NHL teams so far and Mueller has gotten a ton of chances and can be replaced very easily.
Being very bad at finishing is a big part of the disappointment though. He’s been unlucky, but he’s also shown very little shooting talent or finishing ability. That alone is a reason to lower expectations of how much he will produce. He's still getting and generating chances every game. Friday night he had two great opportunities to score and created at least one. Last night he got a breakaway. The disappointment is in the results, but I still see the player he's going to become.

As to Hughes, we need to wait at least another year, I'd say even the season after next - when he'll be twenty - to make judgments.
One would think that the same fanbase that has given Pavel Zacha 250+ games of patience might give Jack Hughes more than 50+ games of patience...

I look forward to people calling our pick this year a bust before we even draft him.Ty Smith got 0 games from some, so maybe people are just less patient now.
I never said Hughes is a bust or a disaster, I said his season may well be classified a disaster. For a bit of a reality check: I have no issue calling Kakko's season a disaster, he's been nearly invisible every rangers game I've seen, and if he does touch the puck he looks totally outclassed (beyond his elite possession skills). He shouldn't be in the NHL right now.
Hughes has looked better than Kakko but they both are sitting at 21 points on the year.
I'm hopeful Hughes can translate his obvious skill into becoming a useful top 6 center, but he's not there yet and I'm not sure he's headed toward stardom anymore. He has to take a massive jump next year, hopefully we can see more these last 20 games to make us confident it's coming.

Noting against Travis, good solid soldier. However, he won’t be helping Hughes much. I rather see Hughes center Wood and McLeod.
Can we now? Because when I said Hughes had an average shot that he needed to work on heading into this season, this place roasted me.I disagree - observable shooting talent takes significantly more than one season to make any judgments one way or another. We can likely infer that Hughes will not be an above-average shooter, but we also don't really have a clear idea of how often he will shoot, either.
People forget these kids are babies and most players do not do what McDavid and Matthews were able to do.
