Other than the obvious half effort it seemed like most guys were putting forward, I think a big problem tonight was defense. I'm actually leaving out transition and d-Zone. In the O-zone, it seemed like every time any of our "top" lines last night got a foot hold, it would always be broken up when passed back to the point. Not sure if the Bruins were extra jumpy with more guys in their line up trying to prove, or we just had a bunch of grenade handlers playing last night that they took advantage of.

But that seemed to be the biggest issue from what I saw. Should not be nearly a much a problem when we have a full starting line up.

Mueller also has the hardest shot on the team, but never shoots.

EDIT: Wait, this isnt true anymore now that the Devils have Subban. Second hardest shot now.
I don’t know about his early development but i think pigeonholing him as a defensive defense men is keeping him from growing in other areas. Would love to put him in an environment where you could tell him to be more confident with the puck without concern of it hurting the team in the short term.

He has the physical talent skills and the defensive accumen to be a top pair Dman. But he is miles away from thinking the game well enough when he has the puck on his stick.

Back to my mueller point.

Halfway or maybe even a little later in the 3rd. Pretty sure down 2. Offensive zone loose puck midway between the top of the circles and the blue line and instead of attacking the puck mueller backs off. Plays it safe. Bruins pick up the puck and skate it up ice.

It was a 50/50 puck for sure and if we had a lead settling back on d makes sense. But trailing there i think you take that chance. Have faith in your ability to make a play. Especially in a preseason game.

My biggest takeaway from last night is the coaching staff needs to figure out how to make in game adjustments to our game plan being shut down and us being forced to play dump and chase.

This staff has not shown the ability to do so since it’s been here. Which is really troublesome.

The staff has had a good team for about 1 preseason game, and it was last night's.

Dump and chase was the adjustment.

Regardless of the talent on the team, a coaching staff needs to figure out how to adjust to what’s going on on the ice. Hynes has yet to shown the ability to do that since here.

Good coaching does wonders for a team. I just look at how the Islanders went from the worst team in the nhl goals against wise to first with a coaching change.

Or maybe the team can't 'adjust' because they were seldom the more talented team in any game they were playing. Being able to adjust is just code for being able to win and the Devils haven't been able to do a whole lot of that with Hynes as coach. No one says 'Oh, the Devils adjusted great, they just lost'. They lose because they don't adjust.

Barry Trotz is a good coach and Doug Weight is almost certainly a bad one, but I would not be betting on the Islanders to repeat last season's performance.

Who says Hynes is incapable of making adjustments?

Funny thing about that pic, I think I was the one who discovered it.....

...then I promptly lost the link and couldn't find it again so thank you for putting it up.

I have a feeling we're going to see a lot of this from Hynes during the season.:laugh::laugh::laugh::laugh:

The Isles were propped up by unsustainable goaltending more then anything else. They were not nearly as good defensively as some like to claim.

I would be surprised if they repeat last season’s success.

I don’t think they’ll have the same amount of success, but that’s because they brought in a lesser goalie and let Lehner walk. I think their issues will be from a lack of offense
