Give Hynes some credit, though I think the Larsson trade opened up the opportunity, he pushed the right buttons with Severson from the looks of it last year. Knew he had this ability, and has had nothing but high praise for him this year.

Sevs has run with this opportunity and it's really fun to watch.
Ya, I def think last year was a button pushing kind of season. His play certainly didn't warrant getting benched. Don't think those were short term moves by coach last year.
Believe Severson is an RFA at seasons end? Could also be another motivating factor for him.

I dunno, I would think sev's is motivated enough to just become a good hockey player. Doubt $$$ has clouded his vision just yet.

Severson isn't going to keep this (or anything close to it) up. He's playing very well, but he has 7 ES points on the 8 ES goals scored with him on the ice.

I don't think his play in the offensive zone has changed at all, it's just that the Devils finally have the horses to play the game in the neutral zone that Damon's wanted to play all along.

Clearly he won't maintain a near ppg pace, but no reason he won't keep his play at a high level. Or even get better as the season goes on. Still see some head scratcher passes from him that I expect he will clean up. Could also see continued improvement in his own end. I think a more physical side will come eventually, but prob not as fast as this season.

And I do think I've seen his play increase from last season to this. I thought he was fine last year, but he does appear better this season.

We can say it's a matter of horses that surround him, but he's as key as anyone right now. As evidenced in last nights game without Hall and Cam.

I don't agree with this at all. He has joined the rush as well as jumped in the play more this season than he ever has at any point including his rookie season. When did we ever see Severson in the paint before?

He obviously has been given a green light from coaching that he never had before, to a certain extent our entire defense has been given the "go". Even Quincey has been down in the paint. We have almost never seen NJ dmen down in the crease in the past. Having the horses is definitely aiding to the success but there has been a strategic change in the usage of the defense this season.

I'm sorry if this was already asked/answered, but did Auvitu see ice time after that hit he took? My eyes were half closed trying to watch the game last night.

I can vaguely remember Sev's getting a handful of chances down in the prime scoring zones last season, but did not often finish.

This year those op's seem to be way more common, and he is finishing at a high rate.

But beyond that I think he is playing with much more confidence. Even that play last night where he had to make a nice play to receive a bad d to d pass, I saw that as a sign of a more confident player.

When did the hit occur?

I could've sworn it was at the end of the second because I recall seeing him as we were attacking right to left. If I'm right on that, then he played one shift in the third after that and then didn't play the rest of the game.

EDIT: I checked and I was right. Not sure why he would play one shift in the third then not play the rest of the game.

And you don't want to give him credit for creating any of those goals? It's not like he's playing the periphery and picking up garbage secondary assists. All but one of those even strength points was primary.

His shooting percentage is high right now, but he can clearly put the puck in the net when he pinches. Almost all of his goals early in his career were a result of him skating towards the circle and ripping it. His shot isn't really strong enough to beat a goalie consistently from the red line, which was the only spot he was shooting from last year with the way the D stayed back.

Lots of positives in this game. I loved the way Zacha played. If he builds on that type of effort, he can be a force. Wouldn't mind seeing him with Zajac and Parenteau for a game if they keep him at LW.

Severson was fabulous once again. Playing like a top pairing defender.

And I think Greene had his best game of the season.

Also you wizards want to cook up a new photoshop for tomorrow's GDT?

This is the longest that a poster has been making GDT's in a while.
