I think the problem with Wedgewood is that he's not very good.

He's had one good pro season and too many mediocre ones. And his one good season was his fewest games played (outside of last season) up to that point and when combining his playoff play that year, the numbers plummet down to the average territory. He got injured early on last year and looked to be playing average when he was injured. Small sample size and all, but I would have bet against him having another .930 season in the AHL.

Cory and Keith are a good pairing. Better strength around them could make a huge difference.

Yeah I honestly don't care what happens with Wedge. He seems like a good guy and I wish him the best of luck, but it just doesn't seem like it would be much of a loss.

The problem is Wedge can't seem to stay healthy. What happens if they let Kinkaid walk and Wedge gets hurt again? There's no way they want Blackwood backing up in the NHL anytime soon.

We aren't competing for a cup next year. If he got hurt sign someone then let appleby start then. If this was a playoff team then sure that's a legit concern losing these games would hurt.

Good contract.

Outplaying Schneider this year was not really praiseworthy, Cory was pretty bad.

Kinkaid is fine as a backup though. If he could play with consistency he'd be a starter, he obviously has the ability to play a high level. This also gives Blackwood and Appleby plenty of time to grow, and Wedge if he stays.

To be fair, the defense did Cory no favors. Cory does not move side to side very well. Kinky does which is why he looked better than Cory. Plus, Kinky was a lot more consistent than the year before

Solid signing especially for that cap hit. Two more years of Keith and then Blackwood should be nhl ready. Then possibly takeover as the starter after two years as an nhl backup. I have really I hopes for MBW but after what he did in the AHL as a 19/20 year old I feel good about his chance. We also havent drafted an nhl starting goalie in 27 years so we're due.

He gets hurt too much

If the initial rumors are right, the remaining guys on the market are Jonathan Bernier, Ondrej Pavelec, Darcy Kuemper, and Curtis McElhinney. Calgary, Colorado, Toronto, and the Rangers might be the only teams in the market. Plus there'll be a few guys like Michael Hutchinson and Eddie Lack who might be moved.

And Calgary just traded for Lack.

So, Schneider/Kinkaid for 2 years in the NHL. Wedgewood and Blackwood in the AHL (with Wedgewood potentially lost to waivers), Appleby to the ECHL.

I like that depth, especially if Wedgewood passes through waivers. I want to see if he can build on his 15-16 season given last year was a write off due to injury.

Also I believe Kinkaid really stepped up his game last year due how Wedgewood finished 15-16. Kinkaid had an outstanding training camp in 16-17 year to win the backup job and kept his form for most of the season.

If Wedgewood and Blackwood can play well in Binghamton then it will continue to apply pressure on Kinkaid to not slack off and up his game further.

A solid point as well on Keith being a good teammate/locker room presence. He definitely seems like a good personality in there and I'm sure you want that out of your backup.

In a perfect world, he keeps the seat warm behind Cory until Blackwood is ready.

Can't hate on it. Rather keep the guy who we know than bring on a backup who has never been here. Rooting for Keith.

You don't have to be competing for a cup to want a reliable backup.

Can anyone comment on where Kinakaid's $1.125MM AAV ranks among backups around the league? If it's middle of the pack or below, this is a good deal.

ANA: tbd
ARZ: Domingue (1.05)
CAL: Lack (1.375 after Carolina retention)
EDM: Broissoit (750K)
LAK: Campbell (612K)
SJS: Dell (600K)
VAN: tbd
VGK: Pickard (rfa)

COL: tbd
CHI: Forsberg? (750K)
DAL: Lehtonen (5.9 mil)
MIN: Stalock (650K)
NSH: Saros (925K)
STL: Hutton (1.125)
WPG: Hellebuyck (rfa), Hutchinson (1.15)

BOS: Khudobin (1.2 mil)
BUF: tbd
DET: Mrazek (3.4 mil)
FLO: Reimer (3.4 mil)
MON: Montoya (1.06 mil)
OTT: Condon (2.4 mil)
TBL: Budaj (1.025 mil)
TOR: tbd

CAR: Ward (3.3 mil)
CLB: Korpisalo (900K)
NJD: Kinkaid (1.25 mil)
NYI: Halak (4.5 mil)
NYR: tbd
PHI: tbd
PIT: tbd
WSH: Grubauer (rfa)

Guys like Hutton and Montoya are probably the best comparables. A lot of the cheaper ones are just coming off their ELCs. 1-1.5 million seems to be the market for a UFA backup.

What's the point though? Wedgewood has had ONE good year a pro. Competing for a cup has nothing to do with it. Suppose Schneider gets hurt and he's done for the year, would you rather bank on Wedgewood being the guy and or scrambling for a replacement? I'm not saying Kinkaid will come in and be Clemmensen of years back but I'd rather hitch my cart to Kinkaid for a while tbh.

He just let in a softy on msg+

Which game were they showing?

Looks like they were showing the Hurricanes game from November, which was probably the Mike Cammalleri hat trick game if Kinkaid was playing.

That goal was just a bad bounce from what I remember, I didn't think that was a bad one.

I like the signing, known quantity for the team and fans. I also think he's as good (maybe better) than most of the dwindling market options at the moment and backup goalie is not where I want to see management invest any time or money right now anyway.

If Kinkaid can pick up a few more games this year that would be nice, he was pretty decent last year. Had a couple where he folded like origami but hey that happens to every goalie now and then.

My point is this.

The season is going to be a struggle if all goes to plan already. If Cory gets hurt all bets are off anyway. So really will it matter if wedge or kinkaid is the guy? Not really we know what we can get out of kinkaid and it's meh backup numbers nothing great nothing bad. Maybe wedgewood takes the job and runs I don't know. On a team that's rebuilding I rather try to catch lightning in a bottle (wedge) then play it safe with wedge.

Like I said either way it's a meh move but I still rather take the chance on the unknown since making the playoffs is a long shot as is.

I'm not happy with this signing but I'm not upset with it either. I'm just "whatever". Kinky was solid last season but Cory was so bad, all Kinky had to do was be his usual self and he'd look like a starting Goaltender in comparison.

Still...there is nobody better out there anyway and we have no one in our system that's actually ready so Kinky it is.

Wedgewood is probably not good.

No.

His last was in Raleigh, but it was in early January.
