pretty good assessment, I thought Smith was off.. did he earn a top 6 role last night? no. was he bad .. no.. some good some bad like you said.. I thought baddock and maltsev for two guys that likely are not making the team looked really good.. Maltsev. is a guy i can see being called up if needed not sure if he will be in Binghamnton but looked smart, good on faceoffs.. etc. liked what i saw. wasn't really dissappointed in anyone.. i thought boqvist. was just nothing .. like you said.. didn't hurt anyone just didn't make any plays.. gusev was really impressive .. that dude has a snap shot that we have not had in a long while on this team.. schneider looked really good
1)Smith's biggest issue last night, and it's something that has stood out to me in my limited viewings, is he get's sloppy with the puck, which is odd for a guy who you would think would be a wiz.

By contrast, and I know he is 5 years further along in his development, but Butcher plays a ridiculously clean game with the puck.

2)I also liked Baddock, not so much to think he will make the team or anything, but I thought the scouting report said he was a plodder, but I thought he had some decent spring in his step, especially for a big man.

I was only able to Scoreboard watch and follow the game through hfboards last night. Can anyone explain a few things to me please...

1. The Rangers badly outshot us... did they hold the tempo of play and we got lucky with score or were they getting a lot of perimeter shots?

2. I really felt like everyone was crapping on Gusev last night until he scored and then the narrative changed to that he had a good game. What is the truth here? How was his overall game with Hischier?

3. Can anyone give a rundown on the guys and how they did?

This will give you an idea bout Cory in he first.

I don't agree with that .. at all. they didnt carry 5 v 5 play. their #1 pp unit going against many guys that won't be penalty killers for us looked really good and accounted for at least half of their shots.. they started with first 3 pp's they game 5 v 5 was very even i would even venture to say the devils carried 5 v 5 play

Thanks, I'm glad someone else was watching the same game I was. NJ was the faster team, and the penalty differential was an absolute joke.

Who scored the game winner?

No love for Seney? Hustles to keep the puck in on the side boards, nice give and go with Hayden and then fights off Ranger superstar Zibanejad and bangs home the rebound.

He looks to have put on some weight and strength over the summer. Not an easy task fighting off Zibanejad.

He’s shown he can contribute offensively at the NHL level and now he looks better defensively. According to “All about the Jersey/Natural Stattrick” Seney’s Corsi #’s are up.

A goal, an assist and plus 2 so far in exhibition. He’s the dark horse for sure but statistically right now, Seney is up there with the Devils’ Big Dogs.

Way to go Brett Seney!

Seney was fine, but thought Hayden did more to create that goal. Plus Haydens 3 blocks in the final minute. Honestly i should have mentioned Hayden long before i did Seney. I dont think i saw anything different from Seney then we saw last season so far. He isnt a bad player just didnt feel like i noticed him enough.

The good thing with Smith is that with Butcher's progression he can get the sheltered minutes Butcher did in '17-'18.

If there was a HF in early 1990's, I can only imagine the ignorance that would have been spouted about Scott Niedermayer in here.

And I'm not at all saying Severson is another Niedermayer, he's not even close, but perspective is needed more on young defensemen, some take more time than others to mature.

There wasn’t an HF but on the old AOL message boards people crapped on Nieds all the time for never living up to his potential, at least in the late ‘90’s.

This can't be overstated. They were missing a couple guys, Buch, Namestnikov, Lemieux, whatever.

We, on the other hand, were missing

Hall
Hughes
Palmieri
Coleman
Zajac
Zacha

PK
Greene

And we still outplayed them.

We won but they outplayed us

I was surprised to see Corey play so well, he straight up robbed the Rangers of scoring on their first 3 PP’s. He looked shot last season, but that’s why they all play. But man, you guys have really solid pieces. Going to be a dangerous team, and I’m excited to see if the Rangers can compete in the division because I love me some Rangers/Devils rivalry. Both teams are up and coming for heated battles for the next decade.

Was disappointed Hughes didn’t play, but man I’m excited to see Kaapo and Hughes against each other. Hopefully they both play Friday, although I have a feeling Kaapo won’t play that game.

Cory is going to shock so many people if he can stay healthy. He's still the same guy when his body isn't broken

New Jersey(No Fanz!)
here is what I would do:

Hall-Hischier-Palmieri
Gusev-Hughes-Bratt
Coleman-Zajac-Simmonds
Wood-Zacha-Boqvist
Hayden

Vatanen-Subban
Butcher-Severson
Greene-T. Smith
Carrick Mueller

thats a hell of a balanced lineup. I know Simmonds and Bratt will likely be switched but still

Now that 2nd Line is a Highlight Reel Line if ever I saw one.

the goose needs to know he can score himself without hughes . (check mark) . although it was a perfect play and pass by baddock . This is the sometimes where there apple is worth slightly more then the goal

wonder how shesterkin really is

i hope hes a bust
turned out to be great. Saved 2-3 goals easy. 2 of them high quality.

Smith isn't making the roster like that.
smith was thrown into the fire tank last night, @msg rags, he did get an assist no? i will check his +- later

Schneider has no clue how to handle the puck and has no business being back there when the d is already going for it
as long as hit didnt pull his groin, let it go

So maaaaaybe everyone's expectations for Smith were a touch too high.
hes way too young, with a HUGE upside. come on now...

Also, I’m done with Miles Wood.
hood just needs to finish. and find a shot or a deke , pick one

I think in a weird way last year might have hurt Smith in the short term. He looked so much better last camp, he knew what he could and couldn't do. "When to hold em' and when to fold em'" perception was better. I think being sent back and just absolutely dominating last season was great in some ways, but also might have given him a false sense of security with the puck.

He looked way too relaxed at times, like he thought he could just dangle the puck away from a forechecker and would get a reality check really quick.

I hope they have him play every preseason game possible, because he needs to keep getting those reality checks that this is the real thing now. You can't just shrug guys off like they are the bad guys in "3 Ninjas." I think once he gets used to that, we will start seeing the Smith of last year and then some.

His issue is not being able to finish.

If he had the ability to finish, then I can tolerate him rushing toward the goal at 100 mph.
wood has be interviewed and self acknowledges that he has to slow down when needed. He just cant apply it to his play to his mind.

No sugar coating it. He's been terrible in every game so far. He will probably make the team purely because it's either the NHL or juniors for him this year.
i think they said it on TV, he would have to go back to JR, he cant going BINGO. Again, some time is needed, if not years (for some defenseman) . I think he will work out. But IF NOT, does he have any other options other then WHL? I do not understand why the devils cant sign him, and send him to BINGO on a 2 way

Man, I really hope you jump to the end and see the post by the mod before you get through the entire thread.
