He really isn’t that good and is made of glass. He will not be worth his next contract, that’s a virtual certainty.

Is there a before Hynes and after Hynes graphic because Im not completely sold on most advanced analytics. If anything, this is an indictment on Hynes system.

I don't know how to read these things. What are they saying?

They're 5v5 zone pressure stats. The top is offensive zone and the bottom is defensive zone. So a positive number up top is good because it means you're helping generate more shots than average, negative numbers on the bottom are good because it means you're helping suppress shots from the other team.

They're not the be-all end-all, and they have a reputation of being unkind to defensemen, but that said, I would not want to sign someone long term if they had stats like that.

You want the top number to be positive and the bottom number to be negative. They’re saying how dangerous the offense is with the player on the ice and how dangerous the shots against are with the player on the ice (compared to when they’re off the ice). I’m not sure exactly how to read the heat map but that’s the basics of it.

It’s not the end all be all but the numbers seem to suggest he’s not that valuable of a player. And I’d bet on Sami from age 30+ to be even less valuable.

Not talked about as much but Goose’s set up on Coleman’s second goal was really nice.

I wish Jack was further along development wise so we could swap him and Zajac. See if you could really get that line on fire.
Yes that saucer pass was a gem. The timing of it in addition to making the physical play. If he does not recognize the play and move the puck immediately he can’t spring Coleman there. Very few other guys (at least on our team) make that play. When you say a player has “great vision” (as people do regarding Goose) - they mean not just seeing the ice but anticipating and reacting to a developing play. He had amazing timing.

At least two great passes tonight, and remember the primary assist on Zajac’s tip in goal against Tampa the prior game. Skating along the blue line before letting a wrist shot go. Again, superb timing and development of a play.

He is a first rate player and I hope we can extend him but I imagine he understands the range of what he’s worth if he hits free agency. Half a dozen top clubs will covet this guy.

I missed the last few pages, but did anyone notice Gusev literally talking to ever player on the team in the moments leading up to the 5 on 3 face off? He was telling every player individually what to do and where to be. I think he started with Nico, then someone else, then saw him yell "PK" and PK came over and he started telling him where to be and what to do. It was really interesting to watch and super encouraging to see him so confident around and with everyone.

Funny thing was, if Bratt(?) pulled the trigger when it got to him and scored they would have had another 2 min power play to work with. From what I could see from hand motions and stuff, it looked to be the play Gusev told them all to set up for.

Top is offensive zone, bottom is defensive zone.

Red areas are where more shots than average are taken from when player X is on the ice, blue areas are where fewer shots than average are taken when player X is on the ice. The darker the color, the more intense the effect. Dark red would mean lots more shots than average while pink would be just slightly more than average.

Ideally you want the high danger areas to be filled with red in the top image and filled with blue in the bottom image.

Yeah I know. But I think he made the right choice in passing the puck to PK 'cause....well...he scored and there was no guarantee that Bratt would've scored if he shot the puck at that point. (Hindsight is Hindsight, and all that)

Very encouraging to see Goose showing some leadership skills despite his limited knowledge of the English language. He knows how to Talk HOCKEY which is the main thing. :)

Should make a run for Dadonov in the off season so Goose has a Russian he can speak with, then extend him to a Hischier-type contract. He just seems to get better and better every game.

Yea, I'm not saying whether or not he made the right choice, because how could we know? But it was the fact that they had a great chance by doing what seemed to be everything Gusev said.

I thought this with Kovy, just give them the rest of the year to get Gusev out of his shell. But after seeing that sequence, it looks like Gusev doesn't need any help communicating on a language or confidence basis, and it actually might be helping he doesn't have a translator, he is forced to figure it out, and he is.

He'd be my top target but he's gonna be 31 when he hits free agency. I'd overpay him for a 4 year deal if he was willing, we have so much space without Hall.

Granlund is having a miserable season heading into free agency. If he bounces back you could maybe get some value signing him. Just 15 points in 39 games this year, but 190 points in 237 games in his 3 previous seasons. I wonder what kind of offers he gets.

Any chance that with all the room to work in the KHL Gusev never really needed much physical strength, but after a season in the NHL he will see the importance of a rigorous offseason workout regiment?

Sounds like it is relative to his team mates, so the system argument shouldn't be in play.

But situational deployment, matchups, linemates, playing with lead and without, does need to be considered, while those charts are just looking at overall results.

Now he's amongst the top 4 toi in both trailing, and tie score, but dead last in playing with a lead, you would think that would skew the stats a bit in his favor.
