Welp...

Just as Big Mac was the reason he kept the Devils in it the previous game(and got them a Point), he is unfortunately the reason (not the Main reason but part of the reason) the Devils could not pull off the win.

He really had a rough go at it today but I'm still a believer in him and he will bounce back.

But I think Wedge starts in the next game as Mac needs to take a break.

Also, poor Sevs just had a tough time of it as well....and his stick felt his wrath(hockey stick that is).

As for the rest of the team, they didn't play all that bad actually.

Kulikov and Murray were very solid. It would suck to lose one of them.

Travis all of a sudden turned into a Goal-scorer today which is always an unexpected (but welcome) thing to see. :)

He opened up the scoring off an unexpected great feed by Nick f'n Merkley(didn't know Nick could pass) :

Of course after that, the Caps put up 3 goals on the Devils (2 of the goals, according to our resident Goaltender expert @Bleedred was unstoppable but the third was ugly as sin) and the Devils were in a hole.

Then Sharangovich with the aggressiveness I wish a certain *SOMEONE*(whom I'll get into later) would copy, unleashes one hell of a shot and a goal that brought everyone to their feet :

That MAN is a very good NHL player. END OF STORY.

Now at that point, the period ended and the Devils were down by just 1 goal (3-2) so many of us were thinking like Jim Carrey(in Dumb And Dumber) was thinking : "So you're telling me there's a chance?".

Of course, Reality once more hit us square in the nuts..AGAIN...and the Caps put up 2 more goals on now confidence-shaken Mackenzie Blackwood.

But credit the Devils for not giving up.

Now....Let me bring attention to Jesper...F'N....Bratt. This guy, whom I'm a big fan of, had just *ONE* Shot-On-Goal going into the 3rd period. *ONE*.

I was beside myself at watching someone who has shown that he can shoot the puck (I don't count that 7 ft paddle as a real shot on goal) just not shoot it but pass it.

Anyway, it seems he may have been reading my(and everyone else's)frustrations on this board 'cause he then did this :

ABOUT. GODDAMN. TIME. (and that's all I will say) :squint:

Moving on, the Devils got some momentum from that goal it seems 'cause later on, Travis Gretzky scored again to make it a game of what was supposed to be a Blowout loss :

Zajac scores second goal of game

Devils ended up pulling the Goaltender but couldn't complete what could've been one of, if not, the most improbably comeback we've seen this season.

Still, good on the Devils for not quitting.

It's still a loss but at least it's a loss that had some POSITIVES in it aside from a Goaltender playing well(previous game).

BTW, I would be remiss if I did not point out how amazing Jack Hughes was today. He looked like the player we expected when they Drafted him for the first time in awhile today.

But whether it's his lack of finish(that he needs to work on) or lack of teammates that can finish(that Fitz needs to work on) or that the Caps have a horseshoe up their collective ass whenever they played us this season, that does not negate the fact that Jack played well (and finally got a point after the fact, for his efforts).

I'm glad this NIGHTMARE Series against this Franchise is over.

I hope the Isles knock the F out of them both figuratively, literally, and OUT of the Playoffs.

And now we will have 18 of the next 20 games against teams the Devils actually have a shot at WINNING.

And I can't wait.

LET'S GO DEVILS!!! :devdance::devdance::devdance:

Oh! Did I forget Jesper Bratt in the Poll?

But I will acknowledge (that Cangy pointed out during the game) that he now has 9 points in the last 11 games.

He's still a very good player but his unwillingness to let it RIP on offense infuriates me.

Devils played pretty damn good today... If they could only put a few of those early chances away. Good goaltending from caps... Didnt get to see replays of Blackwood allowed goals.. But it seems he could have done better on 1 or 2 of em..

Zajac was sniping like he Kovalchuk today. Unsung hero. While Sharangovich gave his best snipe impression.

Shame that a few mistakes were immediately banked by the Caps. Sevs i have no idea why he slowed down on backcheck and kinda gave the caps guy some extra space on that SH rush...

Sevs had a reasonably good game if you ignore that crap. Him and Hughes and like 3/4ths of the team are snakebitten like ive never seen. Zero puck luck. We could have easily had 3 goals after 1 with the amount of high quality chances they generated...

If this team would dish some hits youd actually have some puck seperation plays.. But numerous guys today chose not to take body and caps just made a nice play.

Zacha was too stationary at moments today... Seems he can do more at times....

Yes! So frustrating. A bunch of times I'm like "Who is that guy and why wasn't he moving his feet more?!? Oh it's Zacha again..."

hughes could have had a 5 point game if he got lucky on those post shots and anyone else could finish his dishes. he played really well.

but obv the two main stars are zajac and merkley

So I have Hughes and Blackwood on my dynasty team so I pay close attention to the Devils. From watching every game's extended highlights, it seem that Hughes is creating a lot of offense but either his teammates are not finishing or his shots are either saved or hit the post. He's just incredibly unlucky right now. Is this assessment accurate?

Pretty much. Blackwood came back from having COVID admitting he still felt like crap. Ruff said he was unhappy Mac said that publicly so now Blackwood is probably less public about it but he’s clearly dealing with fatigue issues.

Hughes is regularly creating offense that he and his line-mates haven’t cashed in on nearly enough, Hughes has hit 5 posts, but yesterday he went kind of berserk and had a monster offensive game that resulted in... one secondary assist. If he plays like that again he and his line-mates will definitely get more points.

That said no team has had a more compressed schedule then the Devils, they played 25 games in 43 days before getting two off days in a row, so we can’t expect that kind of insane effort every game. Hughes and the rest just don’t have the energy to play every game full throttle like they did in January, he was probably pressing because we were trying to avoid being swept by Washington. Your dynasty team is going to get a lot more from these two when they can play a normal schedule against teams not named the Capitals and the Islanders.

After posting, I read an article on the Athletic from Corey Masisek, who is great by the way, and he said that only a couple players had an expected goals for game as high as Hughes’s from yesterday over the last 3 seasons and they were McKinnon, and Matthews. So yeah, I guess he was pretty good on Sunday.
