Well that sucked. :thumbd:

Would've been a Happy Recap but the Devils couldn't hold onto the 2-goal lead in the third.

And as a result, they ended losing in the most idiotic addition to an NHL game I've ever seen and CURSE YOU, GARY BUTTMAN for adding it. (insert middle finger emoji here for Buttman)

Anyway, I'm not in the mood to rehash all of what happened even though there were some bright spots :

Travis scoring his 200th :

Bratt fighting the Rat Bastard :

Not posting the actual vid (the only one out there is from the Boston feed where Jack Edwards was kissing Brad's ass and I have no desire to listen to his undying love for the Rat) so here's my meme again above.

And It's always nice that Wood and McLeod got goals as well.

But aside from that : BALLS.

Who were your stars of the game?

Mine were :

Bratt (for his usual contribution and stepping up to fight that rat bastard)
Blackwood (we would've lost the game outright without him despite losing the lead late)
Zajac (only because he scored his 200th goal)

Honorary mention goes to Wood and McLeod.

DISCUSS.

We are the ones who blow leads.

I went with Bratt, Wood, and Zajac for my stars. Blackwood made some big saves, but he let in too many bad ones to be worth a star imo.

That play where he broke up a rush against us in our zone, then seconds later was on his own breakaway was fantastic. I don't think most other players even moved 5 feet in the time he covered half the ice.
I myself moved a good foot off the couch with that beautiful sequence

Yeah that play by Miles was God-Tier. :thumbu:

Too bad he didn't score there.

That would've made him one of my stars then.

Not to mention be one every Devils Highlight Reel.

With his blazing speed, if only he could finish more often....he'd be a Top NHL'er.

Last night's game was frustrating. The support guys did a nice job. I thought that for the most part, the snakebitten guys played well too. Zacha and Hughes both created some offense but nothing materialized. MBW was also uneven, with a couple he'd like to have back, but he also made some great saves and gave NJ a chance to win. Sort of a CC Sabbathia start. Going back further in time, a Sid Fernandez or Andy Petit type start. Anyway, Marchand as usual played a gutless game grabbing Smith from behind and acting like fighting Bratt is some sort of courageous act on his part. Pity Bastian didn't play. It was one of those games where he would likely have made a difference. As others noted, NJ probably should have lost the 1-0 win so losing this game in the shootout may be a bit of karma. If the team's bad games will resemble this one that is still light years better than what the bad games have looked like over the last few seasons.

@Nikita Goatsev

I thought having to submit the first 3 shooters in the shootout was discontinued several years ago now, and that you could just put in whoever you want as you go?

I thought they stopped doing that when they stopped doing the Zamboni run before a shootout, which was over 6 years ago now.

That was some Miler McWoodvid shit from Miles last night.

Please someone tell me again how physicality and grit don't matter to an NHL team.

We were skating as well as we have been skating this year, and completely taking it to them, up 3-1 and 4-2.

Marchand goons it up, McAvoy joins in, and all of a sudden we are gripping our sticks:
Hughes gets pounded into the bench, boards and pinballed off of people
Smith gets beaten down -
Kulikov gets hit (yay Jesper! but I don't want you in that role, please)
Bratt gets thrown down by the rat.
Wood gets cross checked
Johnsson gets ragdolled by McAvoy

It worked for the Caps last week too - Wilson, Dillon, Oshie and Ovie.
It worked for the Lightning against us in the playoffs a couple of years ago.

I'm not saying that we need Ryan Reaves or a goon. I'm saying that we need to go from a 'team-that-stuff-happens-to' victim mentality to a 'team-that-initiates'; a team that will hit, and be aggressive.

The most profound transformation this Devils franchise ever underwent (outside of Lemaire taking over for MacLean) was after the 1994 season. We should have won against the Rags and gone on to the Cup, as we had a better team.
But Graves would slash you, we'd get the retaliation penalty. It's a powerplay goal!
Tikkanen would spear you, we'd get the retaliation penalty. It's a powerplay goal!
Beukaboom would elbow you, we'd get the retailation penalty. It's a powerplay goal!
Messier would cross-check you, we'd get the retailiation penalty. It's a powerplay goal!
Relying on the refs was pointless, because they had the Oiler dynasty and we were Mickey Mouse.

Our team learned how to play that year, and the next year, we would be the ones doing the hitting; and if another player or team took liberties, we didn't complain to the refs, nor rely upon their judgement, we just quietly initiated things, or payed teams back with a good clean hit. When Stevens layed the lumber to Kozlov - the Cup series was over, because Detroit wasn't willing to go to the places they needed to go, nor take an extra hit to make a play, or hold onto the puck long enough to complete a pass.

That turned the corner.

We're going to eventually have to turn the same corner, if we can have any hope of winning in the playoffs in the future - by having players on this team that can nip that garbage by Marchand in the bud - either by bugging Pastrnak first, or by pounding Marchand.

@glenwo2

I was busting your chops about the PGT since youve been the one posting them lately

Well at first I was about to post that I don't do PGT's after losses but then I deleted that and decided....eh, what the hell.

I mean it's not everyday you get Bratt actually fighting someone and Zajac getting his 200th only happens once so....

Murray would have been one of my stars of the game, you should should replace Kulikov with him in the poll. (If possible if you feel like bothering to do so, it’s your poll.)

I love Dmitry but he was on the ice for three of the goals against and one goal for while Ryan was on the ice for all three goals for, got two assists, and wasn’t on the ice for any of the goals against. What’s a brother got to do to get included in a poll for star of the game?

If we won Murray likely would have officially been one, a defenseman with a multipoint game and no goals against usually are.

Murray isn't on the Poll?

Damn. Thanks for letting me know.

And I just put ALL the Devils that played in the game in the Poll which is why I include Kulikov and don't include Goose.
