Another club that puts heavy pressure on the puck. Without having guys on our D who can make that first pass or drive puck possession from the back end, clubs like that have been killing us. See also our recent games against Winnipeg, San Jose. And not incidentally these kinds of clubs are some of the best in the league.

So you're saying we should have never let PDB go.....? That basically was his system here...

I loved Pete when he had a talented veteran team. His system was awesome. He just got stuck with a turd sandwich from Lou and didn't give the few younger players we had any playing time. Even Scotty Bowman would have been fired with Pete's last roster.

First pass is such an interesting thing. What would seem like such a simple and easy play out of the defensive zone, you can really notice when it’s executed at a high level. Or maybe I just feel that way because we rarely ever see it lol.

But it’s a faster game now and I don’t regret trying to play with speed. I just think we are too light, and lack skill on the back end, and I’m not really sure what our system is really trying to do either. Anyway, heavy teams and clubs that pressure the puck give us fits.

2012 was the last time this team truly played strong hockey. And I’m just not saying that because of the playoff run. That team, especially when healthy, was very difficult to play against. Very tough along the walls.

The team that missed the playoffs in the lockout shortened season was strong as well. They were one of the best possession teams in the league, but got lost a ton of games they should have won and didn't have room for error with the limited schedule. They would have made the playoffs over 82 games.

That was the injury year, wasn't it? Lost by 1 point.

Hedberg lost all his games while in relief of Broduer, or Kovy was injured and the team didn't win, the seasons after are blending in...

The lockout team really wasn't very good, they missed the playoffs by seven points and were a -10 in goals scored. The Marty and Kovalsuck injuries didn't help but they were already trending downward after the fluke 8-3-3 start (which seems to be a pattern with recent Devils teams). It was the following year where they were solid and got shootout inept.

The lockout team was actually very good. They were #1 in the NHL CF% and FF%. The Kings were #2. They were 29th in the league in PDO at 96.9, which is the entire reason why they missed the playoffs. Just incredibly horrible luck that year over a limited sample size. They could have made another run if they got in.

Didn't watch the game but from the comments, seems like a typical loss.

I remember when that documentary came out, despite Hynes being a good watch, it kind of irked me that he talked about gaining respect back from the league...What a mediocre mindset. People who have staying power at the top of the game don't give a f*** about the respect of the league because their whole approach is about mastering their own organization and the rest takes care of itself. More often, their approach is ridiculed for a few years and then widely adopted.

That was a bad stretch......... those injuries. Hedberg couldn't buy a win I remember.

Yeah, getting .890 sv% coupled with shooting 7.9% will destroy a team regardless of how much they dominate play. They would control entire games but couldn't buy a goal and their goaltending was brutal.

We don’t need to go back to the plodding days of yore.

We do need some semblance of structure. I have no idea what actually is a blown assignment on this team, and what is by design.

I do think having a D group that is both small AND slow isn’t a recipe for success. One or the other.

I would say a big physical team is the nemesis of these particular Devils.

Very similar to those Canadiens teams circa 2009-2014ish. Plenty of talent, not the case here , but those teams were relatively soft and outworked by bigger, stronger teams and weren't able to get further when they had the talent to do so.

Correction.

Kinkaid trade value is nonexistent...NOW!

Man...Columbus owns us again.

If they faced the Devils 82 games a year, they'd win all 82.

They just have our number this season.

Okay....should I or shouldn't I tweet this to Keith? :sarcasm:

(maybe he'll make fun of me again, and that would jumpstart another run) :devdance:
