whats a compensation pick?? isnt that a pick from the other team for compensation? Im confused

Do you mean add a 32nd draft pick to a round? That ultimately drops everyone one spot - has this ever been done?
Yes, it's a pick for losing someone that doesn't cost the other team anything. It's done in MLB and NFL. This situation is also unprecedented so it's not much to ask for unprecedented rulings. The NHL would never do it but it makes a ton of sense. You screwed us with your halfassed "playoff" round that counts but doesn't so the least you can do is compensate us accordingly. Still wouldn't equal the cost of moving back from 9 to 18 in a trade lol.

My friend, you should start a thread on the main board asking the value of Will Butcher, if there's not one already. Just for mock offseason purposes as a way to feasibly trade him if we need to.

Fun fact, I've never started a thread on this site. Not that it's really my thing, I haven't started many on the other one either and I've been there forever

i am not suggesting to trade MBW for the 11th pick. i try to find out, what keeps people from investing an early first round pick in an elite goalie prospect. is it askarov? is it the russian factor? is it the goalie position?l.

Definitely the nature of the goalie position and the development time it takes is more the issue than the "Russian Factor" .

Gauging how 17-18 years will develop and the longer development - coupled with the relative abundance of goaltenders relative to the number of jobs available - make it almost impossible to project where a goalie will be in four or five years.

For every Brodeur or Price there were just as many (maybe more) goalies taken in the top three rounds who either didn't reach the NHL or plateaued as career back ups or minor league goalies.

For an example, I went back and looked at the 2010 NHL Draft. The three goalies who have had the most NHL success were taken in the fourth, fifth and rounds respectively. At the same time, none of the five taken in the first three rounds are starters.

The most successful, Anderson, was never signed by the team that picked him and re-entered the draft.

For the whole Arizona - NJ compensation thing. Isn't Arizona already in trouble for the whole illegal testing thing last year? So how about they kill two birds with one stone. To compensate NJ, they upgrade the pick they get from Arizona by one round from where it is supposed to be. Arizona gets punished by giving up a better draft pick. Devils get compensated by receiving a better draft pick from the NHL. Sounds like a good plan to me.

Aren't we potentially in trouble for possible tampering with Chayka?

I would give them their 1st round pick back.

And Will Butcher
His performance drastically declined this past years. Sounds like an terrible decision to take his contract on when he has shown that big of a decline year 1 of a 8 year deal. Also with the cap being flat, his contract is more expensive as a % of the cap than when projected when signed so I'd say he probably has negative value.

I just saw that contract. Woof, you're not wrong.

I don't think they will punish Arizona in that situation, which is what they would be doing.

Why should Arizona be punished? It's not their 'fault' the pandemic hit and the league had to come up with this system to make up for the rest of the regular season getting skunked with teams close to the cutoff line and having to get everyone a few games in before the actual playoffs.

You guys are acting too entitled, sure there was like a 95% chance they'd have finished out of the playoffs in a normal season, but that's not 100% mathematically eliminated and they could have also won the lottery in a normal season too.
