No, I've got you. What I'll ask instead...

What did Santini show you in that last month where he got over 18 minutes a night that makes you think he's the undisputed 3rd RD in 2019-2020?

I'm legitimately curious, not antagonizing.
I think Santini's skating is excellent, I think his passing skills are very good and I think he has an underrated shot....I think we still haven't seen everything Santini has to offer and I think he is still trying to find his way and adjust to the league...that is tough to do in 30 game stints. That is really all he has had.

Well, we shall see. Legitimately, I hope you're right. Never want anyone on the Devils to fail, no matter how much we may bitch about him.

I can't wait til Brodin and Trouba are traded to someone other thanus and I never have to hear about trades about them again.

Instead we'll get pages of arguments on why didn't we trade for them and Shero doesn't care about winning and we're doomed to 20 years of mediocrity.

I'll never get this approach. I'm all for building organically. I'm from Milwaukee so, until recently, I watched a professional team (the Bucks) make moves that fit square pegs in round holes in hopes of being a treadmill team. I'd MUCH rather build the way we are right now. Keep gaining assets and picks, draft well, and make our move when we're ready. Even though Taylor has us by the balls, I'm not letting him dictate how we build. Patience pays off when you have a vision. I believe that Shero and Castron have a vision and we're going to destroy the league in the 2020s.

And thus the 2nd question...

If Santini is the heir apparent, why did we even need to audition Carrick? Why not just trade Lovejoy for the pick?

Because they knew they were acquiring something special and couldn’t just offer a pick. I mean it’s Ben Freaking Lovejoy we’re talking about.

If you watch Santini and see "AHL fodder" you might not know what you are watching.
Agree. Not the unicorn like #1 everyone jerks off to, but the kid has value as a 3rd pairing/ PK guy with the right partner (Ty Smith)

I thought Santini would take Lovejoy's spot after he was gone, but I think the staff liked Carrick's offense more. Plus Santini looked pretty bad all the way back in the preseason, so I can't really blame them for preferring Carrick.

I'd be perfectly fine never seeing either of them again though.

I bet they ask for Bratt in return. Makes sense(even though I would hate it) 'cause you need to give up value to get value. :(

I would miss our Unicorn and forever look at Trouba with an evil eye that says "You better be worth it, Jacob!".

On the bright side, I'll be changing my avy to one of the BILLION Jack Hughes avy's out there.

Carrick is WAY better than Santini, but I don't really wanna see him again either.

It's nothing personal against him, I just feel he's very expendable and not needed and we need to upgrade anyway. He's like 25 and has already been on 4 NHL teams. He's NHL caliber, but he's also expendable. Probably just a #5 guy at the very best. I also think his offensive production he had with us was pretty fluky. I don't expect it to be nearly replicated if he's here going forward.

I'd be shocked to see all 3 of Santini, Mueller and Carrick on the roster to start this year. I think at least one of them will be and there's a good chance two of them will be, but I think it's already a foregone conclusion that at least one of them is gone.

Even though he's far and away clearly the worst of that crew, I think Santini has the best chance of the three of them to start out on the team to begin the year, if not only because he's under contract and the other two are not, if I'm not mistaken. I know Mueller isn't. Neither is Carrick, I'm pretty sure. I don't think Santini will be in the opening night lineup (unless there's injuries), but I think he'll be on the opening night roster.

Mueller will probably be Beau Bennetted and Carrick may or may not be David Warsofsky'd, as RFA aged players who will not be tendered and be permitted to become UFA.

If there's one thing the Devils should not be getting it's another project LD. Either go big (a true top pairing guy) or go home, I'd rather be giving our own young D a look before trying to pick up more sloppy seconds.
Been saying this for a while now. Time to go big or just stay home. I don't think it necessarily has to be a clear cut top pairing guy, but it's gotta be someone that's at least as good as a guy like Vatanen. No more reclamation projects on D, we already have enough of them.

Mueller, Carrick, Santini, are all #6-#7 defensemen at the NHL level. Mueller and Carrick being #6 guys and Santini being a #7. Greene is also another bottom pairing guy in current time, if we slot him into where he properly should be used these days, in what will probably be his last season in the NHL at 37 years old. So if we're acquiring another bottom pairing guy like Maatta (who has since been traded) or the like, just don't even bother.

It’s one year. Tampa isn’t giving us a first for Callahan

There were some reports that Karlsson was interested in signing there plus they have Brayden Point to deal with. Point might get a double digit contract, so I have to imagine that they're desperate for cap space right now. If they want Karlsson, it can't be just Callahan that goes even if Point gets something conservative like Kucherov's contract. Maybe we could get them to package Miller along with Callahan if that's the case? I don't know, I'm just spitballing.

I cannot take your opinions seriously if you think Santini is an excellent skater and a very good passer. He’s by far the worst skater in their D core, he is not quick and gets stuck in the mud constantly. He doesn’t have a smooth stride and doesn’t cover ground well. He and mueller have not shown any ability to pass well at the NHL level and Santini never has shown that ability even at BC. If he plays like Lovejoy does and makes quick simple plays and uses his physicality at the right times then he can be a useful bottom pair guy who kills penalties. But to say he is an excellent skater and a very good passer is beyond incorrect.

Are you looking at the right person? (or is there another Donskoi I wasn't aware of?)

The stats below show he is very much a PROVEN Commodity after 283 Games Played.

Eh. I stand by what I said with the caveat that admittedly I thought he was 25ish, not just turning 27. So I’m a little more tepid than my original post but only a little bit. I think he’s still a potential break out candidate who could be had at a good rate. Low risk/high reward potential. 4 years isn’t proven to me, but I know not everyone feels that way.
