When the games mean absolutely nothing and there's no pressure on him whatsoever - book it.

Love Cory (the person) but he's the most mentally fragile goalie I've ever seen in my life.

Cory Schneider is finished as an NHL goaltender and it has absolutely nothing to do with not being able to handle pressure. He is physically not capable of playing the position.

Definitely need to sign a capable NHL backup or even 1B this offseason AND buyout Schneider

I would be fine with any of Khudobin, Lehner (probably will want too much $), Markstrom (probably will want too much $), Greiss, or Talbot

Whoever it is, they will be available for Seattle to take.

I know it's kinda early, but what might our protected list look like? We will have so many players that are probably exempt, but we do have to make people available regardless.

we don't really even have enough forwards to protect as of now lmao. Gusev seems to be exempt (as per CapFriendly) which I didn't even realize. Hughes is also exempt. So I guess as of now:

Hischier
Palmieri (assuming he is re-signed?)
Bratt
Zajac (assuming he is re-signed?)
Wood
Zacha
Anderson?

Severson
Subban
Butcher

Blackwood

Do not forget a team has to expose a player (F and D) that is under contract for 21-22 season and who played in at least 40 games in 20-21 or 70 games in the prior 2 seasons. At this point those 3 D are the only ones under contract for 21-22.

Those issues are easy to fix. You can always resign next years version of Hayden or Rooney to satisfy those requirements if you need too. There will always be a middling forward or defender who will happily take that one-year contract to get a guaranteed NHL salary.

Good chance the Devils sign or acquire a defender this off-season that they will protect leaving one or both of Subban and Butcher exposed to try to get out of their deals.

No doubt. That is one good thing about having Subban. We have the cap space and he can be exposed since he does not have an NMC.

Thats wrong. Schneider has absolutely dealt with huge anxiety issues that pre-dated his NHL career. Remember the first game of the season where Schneider choked big time and allowed a huge come back? He left the game for what turned out to be a non-injury related issues, later revealed to be an anxiety related somatic issue.

Schneider has big problems with his mentality and he's unfortunately never been able to solve it. Its a very important aspect in goaltending, when Brodeur let in a goal I remember many analysts remarking that it wouldn't even bother him in the slightest which is somewhat astonishing as a lot of goalies seem to have some sort of reaction to letting in goals. When Schneider lets in a goal he usually lets in about 10 more on top of that because of his anxiety related issues.

it pays to be cool, just like a pitcher giving up a 450 foot home run, just forget it and go after the next batter, some people have that mentality, some dont

What are you talking about? Schneider allowed 2 goals in the first game of the season and he was not removed for an 'anxiety-related somatic issue' - it was called cramping.

Wild that if Schneider retired tomorrow he would have a better career SV% than Brodeur. Maybe reading body language is not your strong suit.

It would be great if the Devils could just give a one-year contract to satisfy this, but the player has to be under contract for the following season, so it means giving a two-year contract. I wouldn't mind giving Rooney a 2 year deal and then trading for a cap dump to help out.

It doesn't mean Schneider was better. It just means that even though his last 4 seasons have been injury-riddled he was still a hell of a goaltender in his prime, he won a championship in the AHL, and he was a top goaltender in college. People have done these things through anxiety issues, but to just claim that the guy melted down in the clutch because he was never given a chance - it's just wildly wrong, that's all.

I’d rather trade for Dunn and Allen from the Blues, keep Cory in Bing for a season, and reassess in a year
Allen stinks. He’s the kind of goalie that would come here and possibly be almost as bad as Cory.

He had a career year this season (and as a backup), but he’s a mediocre at best goalie in his career. His season this year reeks of Carter Hutton’s last season there, which got him the starting position and contract in Buffalo, where he’s clearly showed that season was a fluke. And then Brian Elliott turned back into a bum after he left St. Louis, despite being significantly better than Allen was while they were both there.

I’d absolutely take him in a trade for Schneider though, no questions asked. But we’d lrobablt have to give a little more, since Allen just had a good season and Schneider hasn’t in years. And Allen has a lower cal hit by quite a bit and if I’m not mistaken, doesn’t he only have one year remaining, while Schneider has 2?

Probably.

Also proofread that post and saw cal hit instead of cap hit and showed instead of shown.

This forum is sometimes hard to use on mobile and lags a lot. If anyone else has experienced this then they surely know what I mean. It doesn’t do it all the time though.

I meant at the end of next year. Devils are likely to have some warm body as the extra forward or the 7th defender that would be more than happy to take that guaranteed year at an NHL salary. For example, this off-season it would be Rooney/Hayden at forward or Mueller on defense. Last year it would've been Agostino or Noesen at forward or Carrick (or Lovejoy pre-trade) on defense. In 2017-18 it would've been Gibbons up front and so on.

Good chance Rooney does get that two-year deal just to satisfy expansion draft. I wouldn't mind it either as he's a quality depth option. Can give you reliable minutes on the fourth line, plays PK relatively well, and chips in some points occasionally.

Oh Bleed is back from his hibernation.. Put him back in it!!!! :sarcasm:
I’d love to post more and I can, but it feels like we’ve run out of stuff to talk about with the season on pause and absolutely nothing going on.

I’ve also had an absolutely miserable (non-covid related) 72 days that just continues and there seems to be no end in sight.

So I’d absolutely love to post more.

I'd taken Allen if it meant getting Dunn in return. Otherwise, I would steer clear. There's better UFA options that we can rely on.

The one thing that makes Allen somewhat interesting is he had his best year when Marty was with the Blues organization in a hands-on teaching role. I'd be willing to take that risk (with Dunn) primarily for that reason. Not saying Marty will be hands on again, but he seems to know how to get the best out of Allen so he can help in that regard.

Sorry to hear things have not been going well. With the draft not happening for a while, unless the Devils hire a new coach/GM there will not be much to discuss.
