What do you mean "you hope he signs with NJ"?

You think he'll sign somewhere else?

Am I missing something here?

I thought he was drafted by the Devils and that means they have his rights or something.
double post, posts are taking forever to post.

This rest time should do wonder for Jack, Nico, and any other youngster minus Bratt who was on fire. For their mental and physical game.

Especially for Jack’s mental and Nico’s physical........ everyone else can kick rocks!

The Devils lack of NHL ready prospects on defense can also likely give him a burned first year of his ELC by playing him immediately and a path to playing immediately in the NHL if he’s ready.

So it’s concerning he’s heading back but I can see the reasons for optimism still too.

If I'm counting on my fingers correctly, waiting actually makes sense for Walsh with regards to his ELC. If he signed today, he'd be required to sign a 3 year ELC (which starts in 2020-21) since he's 21 years old. If he signs next Spring, he'd get a 2 year ELC since he'll be 22 plus he'd potentially get to burn a year. If he went the free agent route after August 15, 2021 he'd still have to sign 2 year deal which wouldn't start until 2021-22.

In a nutshell by going this route, Walsh could only have 1 year left on his ELC entering 2021-22. If he signed today, he would have had 2 years left.

CBA ELC rules for contract length for North American trained players:
18-21 year olds : 3 years [Patrick Khodorenko]
22-23 year olds: 2 years [Mitchell Chaffee]
24 year olds: 1 year [Marc Michaelis]
25+ year old: No restriction, doesn't necessarily have to sign an ELC [Bowling Green's Alec Rauhauser signed today is in this bucket, but got a 2 way deal. Matt Gilroy was a rare case years ago who got a relatively big contract]

What’s it going to take for the devils to host an allstar game. The team has hosted 1 in its entire history. Going to be 40 years soon is that normal?

Well 31 and soon to be 32 teams in the league, you figure the league pretty well wants to give everyone one once every 25-30 years, same with the draft. Generally teams get an All-Star game when they have a new arena or when they come into the league. We'll probably get one in Newark when we get more attractions and hotels around the arena.

I get it with Walsh. If he does see what's available after his senior year at Harvard, why wouldn't you take advantage of it? You sign in April and start your pro career with the team who drafted you OR you wait a few months and sign EXACTLY where YOU want to go for whatever reason. It makes sense. I wish it wasn't allowed though.

I miss hockey for sure, but I’m also okay with this season being put out of its stupid misery too.

There were a few positives, especially towards the end, with Blackwood and the emergence of Mermis (who knows how real that was?) and Severson playing some really big minutes and doing great with them. But Nico also looked out of gas and Hughes was probably ready to put this underwhelming rookie campaign behind him.

Just put this season behind us, at least for the non-playoff teams. Would still love to see a playoffs though. Even if it’s truncated.

We got Butcher because of the same "loophole" so I'm not going to complain if Walsh goes the same route. If I was in the same situation and had the chance at 22-23 to choose where I played, I'd probably at least take a look at the options too.

I wonder what happens as far as compensation from trades if they don't resume or just call it quits for the year so to not jeopardize next year. Like this hiatus, if they resume playing, could help us with Vatanens compensation if he gets healthy. I'd assume Hall is all but packed up and gone from AZ.

Yeah that sounds kind of Bush-league to be able to do that.

It's a loophole for drafted players that shouldn't exist.

Wherever they're drafted, THAT is the team they should play for....at least for a set number of years.

I was impressed with Mermis who came out of nowhere and reminded us what an actual defenseman looked like.

And Blackwood's emergence has taken me off the ledge as there is now HOPE that things will get better.

Yeah Nico was out of gas but Hughes needs to put on some weight on that frame of his and recharge his batteries as well.

BTW, not mentioned as one of your "few positives, especially toward the end" is Bratt. No idea why.

Was he not "consistent" enough for you? :sarcasm:

Bratt was around what I expected from him this season.

Although, I did expect him to get much more ice time.

Speaking of Arizona, I wonder if the halt to the season might save some of their people. As in Tocchet and MacLean and maybe even Chayka too, if he was somehow on the hot seat.

You gotta wonder if a couple jobs all around the league might be preserved for next year, just because of the incomplete season.

This definitely gives some people a longer leash. It also probably sucks a bit more for guys who got gassed a few weeks before the shut down.

Nobody told me there'd be days like these...

I don't think Nico was gassed so much as suffering lingering effects of his leg injury and some emotional trauma of having the stinking pile of poop of a team put on his back at the ripe old age of 20. If the team can get off to a decent start next season I'd expect a nice year out of him.

I remember saying that this should definitely hurt the draftibility of college players just like Russians take a hit too. Not many people agreed with me.

Now question because there always seems to be a double standard on here.

would you want a player on this team that did this to another team to sign here. Basically like butcher. Which he isn’t terribly good but say it was a legit top 2 dman

I think you can take top prospects who go the college route without worry. They’ll only play 1-2 years and then leave but taking your longer developing guys, round 2 and later, can be a problem because if you do get lucky then they may already only be 1 year away from UFA status.

I think you still have to take who you like. Having a 3rd rounder who has NHL potential 2 years after drafted but that you may have to trade is still better than many third rounders.
