Nothing like a Westcoast trip to help the team bond.

Out of Systems, Goaltending, and “All the new faces”, the early schedule probably had a bigger effect on the start than we want to believe.

Weeks off followed by back to backs. Since the dawning of sports most team perform poor after long layovers. The Devils are exceptional at this.

Dallas Stars Winter Classic Jersey | 2020 Bridgestone NHL Winter Classic

i know this isn't devils related but there was talk a few weeks ago about a new/third jersey logo? home run by the stars. i get everyone wants to keep stuff the same here and thats fine but if something is done right (like dallas) i'm open to a new approach to it. just stay away from black please its played out and boring. i'm sure there will be a ton of haters of this jersey

Fun little tid bit here.

Jack Hughes 5v5.

He is 9th on the team in corsi for/60.
Shots for he is 9th.

But scoring chances for, he is 1st on the team.

Team not burying those scoring chances yet though as he is 16th in goals for/60.
Not great in High Danger chances at 13th.

Find this interesting too regarding Hughes on the other end of the ice.

13th in corsi against/60
17th in shots against

But
8th in scoring chances against
and 5th in high danges chances against.

Now usage is in play, he probably gets amongst the easiest minutes in the league, but why the disparity between shots/corsi and scoring/high danger?

"Lou Lamoriello, against everything that he believed in, decided to do some marketing for the team," Hughes said of the infamously conservative former New Jersey Devils general manager. "The first time I got up, it was just horrific. I mean ... horrific. And the second time was OK. And the third time, I won them over. After the game, Lou Lamoriello says he wants me for 15 more dates."

interesting read

Some pro Rooney Stats for yall.

Off zone start % of 10% 2nd lowest on team(behind Hayden).
Off zone faceoff % of 15%, also 2nd lowest(also behind Hayden).

2nd on team in faceoff% at 53%.

But the kicker.

He's been on for zero 5v5 goals against.

Rooney has been fine really. Fills a 4th liner role just fine.

Interestingly aside from Nico, all those guys have a better goals for % with Goose, then without.

Even Nico is a -2 with him and a -3 without(Very much cheating here though).
That's just +/-, and not a good indication of how they will do long term. Fact is they all get caved in when on the ice with Gusev, and don't when not on the ice with him. Zacha has the biggest swing, he jumps almost 30% when not dragging that anchor around.

Ya, I thought his play last year was pretty good, and this year I again think his play is pretty good.

He also brings hidden value in that he hogs tougher assignments(relatively speaking, he's not getting Zajac level tough assignments) which allow a guy like Hughes to get ridiculously easy assignments. People don't factor that in when they draw up a lineup with an all skill 4th line.

And if Wood Rooney and Simmonds remain a line I think we will continue to see solid offensive production there as well.

"And then the fans found out I wasn't from New Jersey, and they came after me. Like, physically," Hughes said.
He claims that while running around the 300 level of the arena, a man accosted him for being unworthy of the Devils sweater -- a ringer, dancing for money, instead of a true fan. The incident was close to boiling over when security stepped in and escorted the angry fan out of the arena.
But the abuse didn't stop there. Hughes said fans sent threatening messages through his website, saying he wasn't welcome at the arena and he would "get smacked" if he showed up to perform again.

I know they won't remain at or above 50% goals for, with that level of possession %'s, but I don't think it's coincidence that his goals for % exceeds his possession #'s with multiple different players.

And I am fully acknowledging those possession #'s are brutal. Just also acknowledging that he is also a highly skilled player who knows how to create goals.

I thought he showed better effort last game, and that to me is what it is all about. So let's see if he can incorporate that into his game. People hate grit, but that is exactly what his game needs.
