Was that loophole different back then bc I'm 99% he didn't stay in college for your years

The loophole revolves around age and not necessarily staying all four years in college. The rule (for North Americans) is that they're no longer draft eligible if they're 21.

The slight difference was before 2004, NCAA players had to wait an extra year to enter the draft in order to maintain their amateur status. So Van Ryn (and also Gionta) were 19 when we drafted them in 1999. Van Ryn played his draft+1 season with Michigan, and then transferred to the OHL as an overager for his draft+2 season. So the loophole was that he was already 21 by 2000 Draft, so he wasn't required to re-enter and thus would be a free agent. (Loophole also that teams only hold the rights to CHL guys for a couple years, but had indefinite rights for NCAA guys until they graduated or left school)

Van Ryn wasn't even the first one to use that loophole; 1997 2nd rounder Ben Clymer had used it the previous year to get a decent deal with Tampa. It just became known as the Van Ryn loophole because Lou put up a big fight and it went to arbitration.

A few other players used it for leverage. Mike Comrie also played at Michigan then played in the WHL and ended up getting a big ELC with the Oilers. Comically, a few years later Comrie and the Oilers were having contract issues again and he requested a trade. Eventually the Oilers agreed to a deal with Anaheim, but it was contingent on Comrie paying back 2.5 million in bonuses that he had earned from his ELC. Comrie balked at that demand so Edmonton GM Kevin Lowe cancelled the deal. Eventually Comrie would be shipped to Philadelphia for prospect Jeff Woywitka and a late 2004 1st round pick. The package that Anaheim was offering? Prospect Corey Perry and a 2004 1st round pick which ended up being 10th overall.

So nowadays everybody can get drafted at 18, so most players would have to stay four years in college in order to use the loophole. But not all players start the NCAA at 18. Justin Schultz played his draft+1 year in the BCHL, then played three years in Wisconsin to use the loophole. Miles Wood didn't join BC until his draft+2 season, so he could have used the loophole after his sophomore season.

But yeah, I've also harbored resentment towards Van Ryn. I sat through Eli Manning refusing to sign with the Chargers which over time I could understand since the ownership was a bit of a gong show at that point. But I always found it ironic that Van Ryn's arbitration was happening simultaneously to the Devils winning the Cup in 2000. If he had played his cards differently, he could have been on the 2003 Cup team. Instead he played in 9 playoff games in his NHL career.

A lot of words about Van Ryn

As a fan, I will always think f*** him, but I really don't blame him for wanting out. The Devils brought along their young players slowly, probably too slowly. After seeing what the Devils did to Brendan Morrison, another Michigan alum - he played all 4 years in college, then an almost full year in the minor leagues until finally making the team full-time in 1998 at age 23 - it's easier for me now to look at a 19 year old kid staring up at 4 years not in the NHL while possibly having NHL talent and rejecting that path.

The Devils did have Scott Gomez (drafted a pick after Van Ryn) winning a Calder as a first year pro in 1999-00 as well. I think Van Ryn's ELC with St. Louis paid him ~300K more than what Gomez got on his deal. Lou was pretty stingy on the early contracts, practically every Devil held out at some point during their tenure.

Our defense was deep but the depth took a hit due to some maneuvering before the 2000 Expansion Draft. Stevens/Rafalski/White/Niedermayer/Daneyko were entrenched but there was seemingly a perfect 3rd pairing RHD spot for the taking. And ironically Van Ryn would have to play parts of the next three years in the AHL anyways before St. Louis shipped him to Florida.

While this is true, Van Ryn's contract was, I believe, a one-way deal. I can't find evidence of this online though.

His deal was larger than I remembered, albeit he likely didn't achieve any of the performance bonuses: Van Ryn is Blue, but that's good

At least nine NHL teams are singing the blues today after Londoner Mike Van Ryn agreed yesterday to a three-year contract with St. Louis.

The deal, which will be signed today, is worth $9.457 million US.

Van Ryn, 21, will receive $1.025 million a year plus bonuses. His guaranteed signing bonus is $1.025 million.

Can't recall if all of the pre-2005 ELCs were two way, or if players could sign a one-way deal as their first contract. It's kinda funny how much the lockout made contract verbiage something we paid more attention to.

I'm thinking NHL camps open either the 12th or 13th of September. The first preseason games in the league are played on the 15th of September, so I gotta figure training camp is a few days before that.

Rookie camps may be just a couple days after Labor Day.

The official site has a pre-order, or at least a "sign up to be notified" when they're on sale. I'll probably end up getting a Nico Adidas retro eventually, since my brain won't approve of the current Adidas set just yet.

What did you type in or search for to find it?

3/19 against the Capitals is the closest home game to St. Patrick's Day and also a national TV game. So that might be a good candidate; Caps would be on a week long road trip but they'd have a couple days to pitstop at home and pick up an extra set of sweaters.

Yeah you would hope there'd be one near St. Patrick's day and one near Christmas, among the four games.

I noticed the wording of every article discussing the Retro jerseys... i dont think they are our third jerseys.

“The "Heritage" classification means that the uniform isn't technically an alternate uniform, so there could be another third jersey in the near future for the Devils.”

I could see the black jerseys being our thirds. But every team is doing that so idk...

We play Washington two days after St. Patrick's day, so that's probably one of them. Around Christmas we play Columbus on the 23rd, then aren't back home until the 29th, so maybe the Jackets game? If we're going the "heritage jersey" label for this, maybe a game against the Rangers and/or Flyers?

I definitely think a game against the rangers or isles or flyers. Team could easily bring one set of unis and not be far from home.
