Fans always overrate their own prospects. We've learned the hard way how you can never count on prospects to make it.

I remember when we were talking about our next generation on D that would include Larsson, Merrill, Gelinas, Severson, Urbom. And look what happened.

And up front with Josefson, Matteau, Tedenby, Boucher etc.

We have several solid names in our pipeline, but nothing is certain. We don't have anything that screams bonafide NHL:ers. That's why I tamper my expectations when we don't have prospects who are totally dominant right now.

Ty would be the guy you look to do that
Ty Smith is at least 2-3 years off from even making the NHL and we aren't waiting for him to get to the point of being a top dman. If he does become one in the future then great we would have two top pair LD because we will have acquired one before then to remain and be more competitive.

i remember too…and i was also one that was optimistic about the potential for the group to make something happen….alas…… larsson for hall one for one

such is the way sometimes

wasnt confident with the forwards at that time as a whole…….and they ended up in a 'hole' lot of nothing

f***ing matteau as a pick? really?

I agree for the most part

But Smith was pretty dominant in the WHL. He's not a sure thing, very few prospects actually are, but he's still a damn good prospect.

I’m convinced that we got this years Jakob Chychurn. Defenseman that dropped for no reason other than other teams going off the board to grab who they wanted. Despite the size difference I bet he has a similar speedy path to the nhl, not this year but next.

Edit: Talking about Ty Smith of course.

Look at next years UFA class isn't that why Shero is holding on to the dollars.

Crazy 2019 UFA maybe some of the big signings will happen then.

Big year waiting for Our AHL squad with some key additions and some veterans to back them up. They need to take a step forward to becoming a mediocre team again, and our young guys need to adjust rather quickly.

What a year it's gonna be with NJ, can they prove they are a playoff team once again then I will start to believe in this "character" "competitiveness" and "brotherhood " words that Hynes and the rest a throwing around in every interview they are doing.

I like what I see on and off the ice in terms of player development and maturity that the team are showing. I just see this upcoming season as a benchmark for our entire organization, now we aren't surprising anyone more with our identity and speed. It's harder to stay on the top then to get on the top.

I'd love to try and snag Eberle from the Isles in next year's FA. Hopefully he sees what his buddy Hall is doing here and wants to move across the river. I'd have to imagine his chances of re-signing with them wend down with JT leaving

TSN has an article posted in which Shero is quoted as saying we were in on two forwards. I think it’s common knowledge Maroon took less $ from the Devils to go home to St Louis. Shero says the Devils also went after JVR but he chose the Flyers.

And so we wait...wondering what’s next (if anything).

Character and competitiveness aren’t defined by the team being a playoff contender. They are essentially what breeds effort and effort when it might be easy to stop trying. If the team plays hard and misses a playoff spot because they lack goal scoring talent or the goalies falter that doesn’t mean the character and competitiveness aren’t there.

I think Shero's been following a formula the years he's been here.

1. He targets 1 or 2 specific UFAs and if he gets them, great. If he doesn't he moves on (Boyle last year, JVR this year).
2. He waits till training camp and offers 1 or 2 PTOs to players he thinks can help.
3. He picks up a player off waivers as training camp concludes.

He also seems to follow a formula for draft
1. He drafts a goalie in the mid rounds
2. He drafts 1 or 2 over-agers in the late round.
3. He dives into relatively unkonwn European prospects late rounds.

I'm waiting for camp to see how it plays out.
