Its not always the best to have a top 10 prospect pool unless its backed up by a top 3 pick from the most recent draft. They're usually carried by players that should be NHLers but haven't stepped up. Previous prospect pool darlings consist of guys like Brayden Schenn, Jacob Markstrom, and more recently, Dylan Strome.

The top players don't stay as prospects long enough to make a difference.
Plus there's still a few guys there where we're not quite sure what we have. Seney for instance had a pretty productive first 12 games last season for Bing. Boqvist had 13 points in 23 games as a 19 year old in the Swedish men's league. There's some potential there that's not being talked about because none of these guys were taken in the first round.

Our prospect pool is ranked bottom 5 easily...
Prospects are so hella-overrated ASF, dude. I’d take PROVEN caliber NHL players that are younger than 25 over some maybe prospects any day. And last year we had Hischier, Bratt, Butcher and Wood, all under 25 years of age and all surpassed expectations in the national hockey league rather than lighting up some Euro league overseas or cooking up the AHL. That’s worth so much more than some prospect depth chart. These are players who are ready to contribute NOW and not down the road. We also had Coleman and Noesen give us big depth contributions when they were looked at as probable career minor league fodder last offseason. Look no further than that article posted in this thread of how overrated prospects are. I remember when Tyler Eckford and Matt Corrente were seen as legitimately good prospects and Jon Merrill, Eric Gelinas and Reid Boucher were these future stud muffins.

That list from 2011 should serve as a cautionary tale. We were all high on a lot of these guys at the time. Don't count your chickens until they bring it multiple years in a row.

It's not about that, not really. It's that prospects are usually drafted because they are doing well relative to their peers in various junior leagues. Fans don't often make the leap that while, yeah, it's great that this player is doing well in their junior league, they're really competing against the other top prospects in that league, not the average player - the average player isn't likely to have a pro career worth mentioning.

Dude, those three guys were looked at as studs for the longest time LOL!

And Eckford was a really heralded prospect at one time. I mean, that's pretty bad. At least Corrente was a 1st round pick, but he was amazingly awful. According to hockeydb, Corrente hasn't even played hockey since 2015-2016 and that was Florida Everblades of the ECHL and only 13 games. Eckford hasn't even played since 2013-2014. For the Binghamton Senators!

Thankfully, gone are the days where guys like Tallackson, Suglobov, and countless other nobodies are high on our prospect depth chart.

Nobody told me there'd be days like these...

The only thing better than success in the NHL as a teenager is apparently success in the Swedish men’s league.

Just a bit of contrarian on my part but:

1)Boucher is an excellent AHL player, but lacks the skates to be an NHL'r. He was close.

2)Merrill is a meh NHL player, but he is an NHL player. A fair amount of the guys we are excited about now probably won't reach that level.

3)I really wasn't even aware of Gelinas until he came to the NHL and for a brief moment looked like a star in the making. Maybe I wasn't a regular here at that point and as in tune with the prospect pool, but I don't remember him being a big prospect until he came to NJ.

Walsh and Davies deserve some hype

I don't think I do. I asked a question, I'm interested in your opinion if you'd like to give it. What can we give up WITHOUT hurting ourselves down the road for any of the aforementioned defensemen?
Why not develop them then?
Any trade for a good player hurts and even if every one of our prospects and picks lived up to their potential we couldnt fit everyone so we can afford to move certain assets.

I think he scored like 16 goals in the AHL in 11-12 or something like that? Gelinas I mean. I'm too lazy to look it up exactly.

And that was looked at as like ''Holy shit!'' at the time because that NHL season, we barely had 16 goals combined from our defensemen.

And yeah, it was 16 goals in the AHL that season and we only had 16 combined goals from our defensemen that NHL season.

Corrente was constantly injured. I think he could probably still be a pro somewhere without the injuries, but also the Devils probably don't take him in the 1st round if he wasn't a 5' 11" D who played like he was 6'3".

Eckford was probably never going to be anything but Devils fans had just watched Andy Greene and Johnny Oduya come out of nowhere to be regular contributors.

If Devils fans were ever high on Tallackson that's their own fault - it's surprising he turned out to be as good of a pro as he was.

I was never at all high on Eckford. I think it may have been the Greene/Oduya effect, combined with not a lot of then exciting D prospects.

I was never high on Tallackson either. I remember a lot of times between 2005 and 2007, people wanted him called up and I never got the hype.

Hey yall... what if... we ALREADY have a #1 dman in our system, and plugs would just block him out?

I dont think I'm alone in thinking Santini has the potential to be a top 4 shutdown D. And shutdown D are getting rarer in today's NHL meta

Out of all our prospects, I personally am most excited about Ty Smith, Joey Anderson, Reilly Walsh, Ty Smith, Brett Seney, John Quenneville, Ty Smith, Jeremy Davies and Ty Smith.

Did I mention I really like Ty Smith?

Tallackson was still performing well in the German league up till a couple year ago.

What do those guys make over there anyways? Always interesting to consider what it would take to play over in Europe as opposed to just moving on with your life. Me personally I think I'd play as long as I could. Take the adventure where it leads.

Im not super hot on Santini, but then again, Im not at all looking to bring in a rhd. Hopefully Santini can phase out Lovejoy as early as this season. Then see where it leads from there.
