+ Gignac inexplicably scratched at the last second despite leading the team in points with 13 points in his last 11 games. Bizarre.

I have been a Gignac fan for a long time. If I never get to see him play at least a few games in a Devils jersey I'm not gonna be happy.

Hey guys... I noticed an interesting stat about my boy Nico. He leads the Devils in +/- and is the ONLY forward with a positive +/- on the team, as of today. Thought it was worth mentioning.

didnt you get the memo? its 2019 and no one cares about +/- anymore :sarcasm:

but yes, nico is awesome and just getting started on a long, great career with the devils

With respect to the Schneider discussion, if he is truly finished as a player in the league, given the abundance of cap next year, why buy him out if they can carry him in Bing after waiving him to make a buy out after next season more palatable?

its been mentioned here that it would be the smart move a few times….no one is going to want him anyways so might as chance on the waive down

nico is the middle dot wondering…."why am i positioned here?"
Their positioning is fine if they were actually attempting a down low triangle, instead they try and force passes across the slot constantly. This is what they should be doing with their umbrella setup instead of forcing the pass through the slot, which is extremely difficult to defend against when you execute it properly. Of course you need to move the puck quickly to make it work.

Except the Devils rarely ever attempt to set him up for those.

It's in the play arsenal, sometimes someone feeds a shot to the middle for him to redirect, but they RARELY bother with it.

i only saw about 3 or 4 minutes of todays game……near the end of the first with the PP……noticed bratt on left point doing some nice work and boyle working low…..they had great puck control but never amounted to a solid chance

They tried this plenty today; it didn't work. Part of the problem is that Nico as a left shot is going to have a hard time getting loose in the slot and the pass is much more difficult. You need a right-handed shot for that play to work regularly.

Buying him out at the end of next season would save two years on the cap hit as I understand it. Seems like a simple decision to me.
It really only saves one year of the cap hit. Technically it saves two years, but if we buy him out after this year, he's on the cap until 2025. If we buy him out after next year, he's only on the cap until 2024.

Having his buyout on the cap for one extra year is a lot better than him possibly f***ing us next year by being on the team and killing us in games. We need two serviceable goalies on the roster all of next year, if possible and only having one serviceable goalie on the roster until just before Christmas, was just one very painful costly factor this season. At the very most, he might still be serviceable, but even if he is serviceable, he's too much of an injury liability to be #2 on the goalie depth chart next year.

He really shouldn't be on the team next year. If you can't LTIR him (players have been LTIR'd for much less and much more questionable conditions) then just eat the buyout. We're not a cap team next year very likely and he's gonna be on a buyout anyway by 2020-2024, unless there's an amnesty buyout after next year. Just let it be done with.

Each game from Blackwood is really just more nails for the coffin, but I think the book was already written before that.

Only drawback I see of bringing back Cory and sticking him in the AHL next season is that he will squeeze either Cormier or Senn to the ECHL. Which is a pretty minor consideration.

And how bout Drew Stafford?

He's consistently been in the middle of scoring chances over the last 2 weeks.

I also found it interesting what Hynes said in regards to Stafford and Zacha. How Stafford as a vet guy who likes to talk is an in game coach/motivator for PZ.

Would like to see Zacha bury one of those power moves which he has been going to of late.

Stafford got too much heat IMO. He is what he is.

So in the 11 games that Hall has missed this season,

Nico has 5 goals and 4 assists. In the 9 more recent games Nico is at 4-4-8.

Edit: Perhaps even more interesting, he has 3 or more shots in 5 of his last 6 games, 4 or more in 3 of his last 5. 2 or more in all but one of the games since Hall last played.

Encouraging, perhaps a silver lining to Hall's injury.
