Butcher is above 57% scoring chances. Above 60% in high danger chances.

Every stat argues that he, or at least the team, is very effective when he is on the ice.

If the team continues on at 60% goals for, he could go pointless imo.

There is not another d-man above 47% in goals for. Butcher is at 60%.

Yes I know, sitatutional play needs to be considered, competition needs to be considered, but his on ice stats are fantastic.

I’m starting to question the legitimacy of these stats when usage is really hard to determine.

Butcher starts heavily in the offensive zone. Often times he’s taken off the ice when he ends up in the defensive zone for other defenders. He should be posting those numbers. If he wasn’t there’s something wrong.

He does seem to be struggling much more this year. I think it would be interesting to track how many times he’s taken off for a defensive draw that occurred when he’s on the ice. That would be an interesting stat to track to see where players begin and end their shifts.

Butcher's most common d-partner is Lovejoy. Together they have a 65% goals for, have an off zone start of 39%, and offensive faceoff % of 47%.

With Vat's, his 2nd most common partner, but with whom he played less then half the minutes as with Lovejoy, Butcher get's way more offensive zone starts, as I think they are used most often when we are trying to generate offense(ie we are losing). And with Vat's his goals for is only 53%.

But look we do need to consider all these things, the situation, and the competition, but when you settle up the bill, Butcher is way ahead of the competition he faces.

only have 12 forwards currently active on the roster and need a spare player in case of injury before the game.

Your logic is falling on deaf ears.

    Rooney likely won't even play.

Did we only have 12 forwards on the roster the last few games? I’m just trying to figure out who is missing from last couple games on forward.

They’re also embracing the tank it appears. I guess they don’t want to bring McLeod, Studenic or Gignac into this **** show

I think so, i dont think any forwards have been sitting. Which is bizarre it took this long but i think Blackwood has to be out for a certain amount of time before being put on retroactive IR so maybe thats why.

I wouldnt call Yak an offensive D man, but either way, he has not been on the big club roster for anywhere near close to "the majority of this year".

you wouldnt????? and he has played 11 games in the nhl and 8 in the AHL and has probably been a scratch for 10+ games so i would say thats a majority of the year.

I think he’s actually been on the roster for longer than you’d think and longer than it seems. Maybe not quite half the year, but he was called up and was a healthy scratch for something like 10 games before he even got into a game.

It definitely seemed like it was a long time that he was up before he got a game.

This isn't what happens. Most of Butcher's shifts, like anyone else, start on the fly. From a comment on AATJ yesterday, zone starts per situation for Butcher - 102 OZS, 130 NZS, 74 DZS, and 475 OTF (on the fly) — that means he starts ~13% of his shifts in the offensive zone. It's more than most, but is not going to make a bad player look good (and vice versa).

Not very often and it shouldn't affect his numbers all that much.

Butcher's good, even if he is small and slow.

With Hall and Johansson out, there is limited talent for those up-and-comers to play with.

You might as well call up plugs that suck. You wouldn't be putting those younger guys in a position to succeed.

I actually NEVER once gave my opinion on what I thought about his play in his own zone. I just think some of the criticism is over the top ridiculous that's all..

Damon Severson has been on the ice for a lot of goals there is no question about that...41 of them to be precise...In fact he is top 10 in the league for Dmen that have played over 500 minutes 7th worst..or bottom 10 how ever you look at it...

But I think it is a terrible matrix of how he is actually performing. Zach Werenski(9th) and Aaron Ekblad(8th) are right behind Severson having been on the ice for 1 fewer...Werenski is one of my favorite young defenders in the league....I think the GA/60 is a clouded picture at best.

EDIT: And just a note...the 1980's defenders were mostly high flying like the forwards...The type of Dman you are thinking of didn't come into prominence until 1990's. Scott Stevens played Defense sometimes in Washington...I remember.

Yes, it was only 12 with JQ or Pietila in the lineup.

Let’s hope Keith doesn’t get blown up or he might get Bronx cheered like the last time Cory played. Cam Johnson might receive an even louder pop than Keith did relieving Cory or what Blackwood got relieving Keith last time.

I was actually just thinking that, if there were such a bet, I'd put money down on the Devils' starter getting pulled tonight.
