Maybe Bratt closer then we think?
Bratt's return really isn't tied to Gryba being put on waivers. Bratt obviously isn't playing tonight and the next game isn't until Saturday, so if this move was at all related Shero would just wait until Friday to put Gryba on waivers in order to active Bratt on Saturday. You also figure he'd wait to see if anyone got injured in tonight's game that would negate even having to open up a spot.
That's why the timing on this is so odd. There's no NEED to put Gryba through waivers at this point at all. Unless there's a trade in the works where NJ may acquire an extra roster player, and even then you can just move Quenneville down to Binghamton on a paper transaction for 24 hours in order to clear a spot and allow Gryba to pass through waivers.
Maybe there's something else to the timing where NJ had planned on trying to sneak Gryba down and maybe there's really not too many injured defensemen out there at the moment that he has a better chance of passing through now versus earlier in the season. I just don't see him being a possible waiver wire pickup considering any team could've just signed the guy as a UFA for more than the $700K NJ paid.
