I thought it was closed to the public until Wednesday

They are closed to the public Monday and Tuesday, but select-a-seat is going on around then both days for the full time STH's.

Today was the longtime hardcore bunch, many of which sign up with no intention of switching seats. They're just there for a walkabout in the timeshare.

Ah, makes sense. I saw a tweet by Amber Jay mentioning fans out there, but didn't see anything on the schedule until Wednesday.

Might try to make it out Friday or Saturday.

I'm rather enjoying the live stream. Nicely put together by the Canesvision folks. Wish the white team had numbers so we could tell who they are :(

Nit-picky initial feelings:

- McGinn looks pretty good without the puck. I can see the LaRose 2.0 comparison and that's not a bad thing.
- Fleury isn't very impressive with the puck on his stick. Big kid with nice footwork, though. He doesn't look NHL ready to me, at first glance.
- Aleardi made some interesting plays, but that may just come with being older and professionally experienced compared to most of these other guys.
- Pederson dropped a guy with his strength, nice to see.

Not much else besides that. These development camp drills are always a bit of a tease, it's nice to see the players but hard to take very much away from what you see.

I think the interview (with Daniels I think) on McGinn was also telling. Said when he came to the Checkers Daniels asked Francis if he was sure he was ready as he was only 18 so he played him. Said he does all the little things that makes a team successful but you don't always notice. Chips a puck out at the right time, takes a hit to make a play, makes a hit to make a play, goes to the front of the net, is tenacious, etc..

This is one of the reasons why I think he has a better chance at an NHL career than some of the other prospects because coaches love players like that and aren't afraid to play them. The fact that he has shown some skill and offensive potential is nice as well. Again, no guarantees, but that's the reasoning.

Fleury reminds me a lot of Ryan McDonagh. McDonagh's very overrated here on HF, but he's still a solid top pairing guy. Fleury's built somewhat similarly and can skate really well like McD can. McDonagh wasn't great with the puck when he was drafted either but that developed in his game nicely. I could see Fleury following a similar path.

I know that we were talking in one of the threads about the "potential" of guys like Pesce, Slavin and Carrick. FWIW, in the interview, Francis specifically pointed to those 3 guys as guys the Canes have higher expectations than some of the other picks.

Dammit. I was gonna post that comparison yesterday. Using the same point about the offense too. Mcd wasn't known as an offensive guy really, just a solid two way guy with a lot of room for growth.

I don't mind a jbo comparison either, just remove the jbo hype. Tall, good skater who can eat a lot of minutes but never had the offensive game to really blow up.

Wow, Slavin lead his team in points as a freshman defenseman.

That's...pretty good.

Slavin led all NCHC defensemen in points as a freshman, which is even better. That includes smoking Jordan Schmaltz who is is considered a good 1st round pick hyped for his offensive prowess.

Edit:
Slavin: 5-20-25 in 32 GP
Schmaltz: 6-18-24 in 41 GP

Yup. I like Slavin a lot.

Also, Pesce (noted "defensive defenseman") upped his offensive production from 6pts in 38gms last year to 21pts in 41gms this year. Hopefully that offense continues to grow.

Even Carrick as well has had considerable offensive growth. He had 22 (!!!) goals and 51pts in 70gms this year. I'm interested in seeing how he does in Charlotte.

Oh no, that's bad news. They may have puck skills, which makes them "offensive defensemen", which means they are bad defensively. As we all know, offensive and defensive abilities are inversely related. We're going to need to balance them out with guys like Tim Gleason who will "stay at home". I think this news of their junior/college hockey production makes Ryan Murphy expendable in a trade for someone girtty, preferably someone who has never scored more than 10 points in a season at any level. Again I'm right in my analysis.

I'm interested in a few of the guys coming to Charlotte for the first time this year. It doesn't mean much necessarily, but Carrick did pretty well in the coaches polls in the OHL. He was voted second in his conference as an offensive defenseman and the second hardest shot in his conference according to the polls.

No, that's a "generation" too late. They'll have to find another over the hill center who led a Cup winning team very early in his career.

Oh God, they're going to trade him to reacquire Eric Staal in three years.

I think Vail was also voted award/s by OHL coaches, I think best shutdown center and maybe best unsung player. I am not sure.... He looked good on live stream yesterday as did several of the older players (not surprising) and Fleury.
