edit: as for the trade itself can't say I know a ton about him but seems decent enough, low risk medium reward kinda thing

Very outta the blue but Yzerman must know him and like him. Hes only 24, fairly gritty and is 6'1, 215 lbs. Not sure the offense will ever come around with him but he could be a good third liner thats tough to play in the playoffs

Cool. Yzerman/Verbeek must like him. Didn't Yzerman said they might add a winger later in the summer when he discussed the Filppula signing with the media?

Erne is a current RFA, fresh off his first full NHL season in which he amassed 7 G and 20 points in 65 NHL games. He should see a slight raise off his recent 1 year, 800k deal. Seems like solid value for a 4th round pick.

He’s going to be a 20G 40 point player like Ferland... Erne is good
Well that would be a very nice outcome. Even if he stagnates though 20 points isn't bad for a gritty fourth line winger.

He's a pretty good punching bag at least. Only gave up a 4th for a AHL/NHL tweener. He can fill in when there are injuries.

jeez. Can't say I like this deal much.
We need another grind line left-handed forward?
Hope this means someone else is moving out.
Also those two mentioned can easily be waived and forgotten about, and poor Colin Campbell or Dominik Shine would lose their regular spot, what a big deal!

My gut is this was a cap casualty "break glass in case of emergency" type of deal from Tampa with the Point negotiations. Not to say it was him or Point, but Erne had enough value to return a mid round pick and clear a little breathing room.

He was likely an Yzerman pick, and Yzerman probably knows his game just as well as anyone in the business. This is a very cheap pick up with very little downside to it.
