More expensive than I thought. Maybe just crazy thought now, but could he have gotten this much to make it even harder for cap strapped teams to sign their RFAs?

If I had to bet, I'd bet that this year was a bit of a fluke, but DET is the perfect team to take the bet and hope that it's not. Absolutely nothing to lose and the contract has no real downside.

This contract hurts teams with players that have arbitration rights in this flat cap. Coming off a 0.5 ppg year and getting almost $3 mill.
Something that guys like Virtanen and do will be using.

Bad news for any teams with RFAs this off-season IMO. Good contract for Fabbri and the Wings have cap space, but only 2 years at that price is kinda underwhelming.

He was a highly touted prospect who proved a lot before having a few season’s de-railed by injuries. Got traded, got an opportunity, and went on a 50 point pace with one of the worst offensive teams ever.

Under $3M on a bridge is as good as you could hope for. His issue is if he gets hurt again, and that’s remedied by LTIR.

...so?

Maybe GMs should start being smarter about throwing around money

When there is a precedent, you just lose the player by being “smart.” This is one of those deals that seems a little high for what he has done, which sets a precedent and makes it harder for teams to be smart.

You should be responding to the OP. It would make more sense that way. Signing Fabbri to 3M is more risky than smart, but they have the room so no big deal for them.

39 total games? I guess we will see.

what it does do is make kerfoot/kappy/AJ value contracts that are easily moved if needed

26 years old. career ppg 0.51. 3.5 million per year for the next 3 years
24 years old. career ppg 0.45. 3.2 million per year for the next 2 years
25 years old. career ppg 0.536. 3.4 million per year for the next 2 years
24 years old. career ppg 0.49. 2.95 million per year for the next 2 years.

The idea that Fabbri is vastly overpaid doesn't jive with reality.

Kappy I agree, AJ and Kerfoot I don't question that they can be moved, I just don't think there would be huge value in return. Kappy is younger, signed for less and has a very specialized set of skills with his speed and ability to PK. If you can get a mid round pick (or 2) and no salary back for AJ or Kerfoot I think you pull the trigger.

and this year. Kappy makes 2.1 x 2.
AJ and kerfoot make 2.6 x 3
they drop down ton like 1.75 x 2

in real money

Good for Fabbri cashing in. Do you all want DLR back for a late round pick? I doubt the Blues can afford his RFA increase next year and it is probably better to get something than to let him walk for nothing or bolt to Europe. We have too many players just like him or better that are under contract.

Realistically, of the teams that have the cap space to take on contracts, real money only matters to Ottawa.

Many teams will have internal caps according to the insiders. The cap hit is kinda irrelevant now. In real money. All those contracts are front loaded. So the actual trade value goes up because paying less. The numbers presented are cap hit. Not actual salary.

agreed though. It is straying off topic.

Fabri for 2.95 x 2 is pretty comparable to kappy at 3.2 x 3 and lindbolm at 3 x3.

it’s a reasonable deal. 39 game soup is not a comp to Fabri
