since it sounds like Stepan to Ottawa is being discussed, what would it take for arizona to offload Stepan to Chicago?

a few thoughts why:
-dach is injured and out for a little while
-arizona really needs cap space and had very little room or flexibility to do anything
-stepan is in the final year of his contract so this doesn't impact chicago's long term plans
-chicago could likely acquire Stepan cheap to clear cap for arizona (maybe for a 3rd at this point?)
-stepan could keep the 2/3C spot warm until dach returns, then when Dach returns he can play on the wing until he gets back up to speed and then Chicago could flip Stepan at the TDL for a price greater than they acquired him for
-chicago is currently sitting on cap space with only strome to bridge, but have a lot more potential cap space to go over the ceiling with smith, dach, nylander, and shaw all potentially/likely starting the year on LTIR
-this could avoid forcing too many rockford players up to the NHL too soon as injury call-ups when they aren't ready yet or will barely play

Not sure the Hawks have the cap space
between nylander, dach, and smith that's about $4 mil in LTIR cap space alone on top of what they already have, and there's a good bet shaw and his $3.9 mil cap hit won't be playing this season either, plus the cushion they already have before those moves even without strome signed yet

you can’t use LTIR space fortrade space unless you know they are out for the season or can return in playoffs.

if seabrook was out for the year you could acquire him against his space.

I didn't suggest we could. they could easily bridge or sign strome to their remaining space to take them to the ceiling limit and then LTIR all the guys eligible which would give them the needed cap to acquire Stepan. LTIR just requires a minimum time out which most would qualify in Chicagos situation and the cap is calculated on a daily basis regardless, not a season long basis

that is 100% false you can only use LTIR if you know they will be out for the season, the rules are a minimum of 10 games and 24 days

Arizona needs centers. The Ottawa thing makes sense with Anisimov in the deal. Not sure Chicago has the equivalent, given the circumstances.

you are missing my point....

yes LTIR can be shorter than a full season and you can call people up against there space to replace them on the roster until they are healthy. When they come back their cap fully counts.

as a result you ca not use LTIR space to sign a free agent or acquire a player unless they are out for the season because when they come back you will be over the cap.

with the long term irpkayers like savard, Hossa, etc you have few options...

1. At start of season you send ELCs down, put player on LTIR, then call up players against that space. Boston did this with savard when they had a few ELCs. They had to trade him when the ELCs dried up.

2. Toronto did this to sign Marner. They acquire 2 high LTIR players who added up to about $11M. The put thrm on LTIR at start of season and then signed Marner and put him against that space for that season

3. Philadelphia did this. They did PTO for some vets in preseason Thrn signed thrm to season contracts after season start once Pronger was put on LTIR

4. Chicago did this with Kane where he was out for the season but playoff ready so thry used his LTIR space to get a vet.

if this is a player you expect to return during the season you can use his space only for call ups but not for trade/signings

I guess if Chicago wants Stepan and will give us a decent asset, I’d be okay with doing that and then signing both of Brassard and Soderberg as replacements for about 1/2 the combined cap hit for a season.

Smith and Teply to Arizona for Stepan. Arizona gets a +1 pt per game prospect and LTIR space with Smith. Clear the $6.5M cap hit and add $3.25M in LTIR.

Stepan fills Dach's spot until healthy. Hawks flip Stepan at the TDL with money retained for the remainder of the year.

Assuming CHI has cap, which it is not 111% clear it does, why Stepan? Granted he is a stop gap, but why not go younger/better w/Ryan Strome (or similar)? Rangers need to unload young vets, make mins for bluest chip elc guys.

Feel free to make another thread to discuss offers for Strome to AZ.

or

3 way, if the fit is better?
Strome to AZ
AZ assets to CHI
CHI assets to NYR

[not sure that is a better fit, just widest possible view]
