Ok...I think it is beyond time that there is a sticky post for the DP. Instead of having their crap infiltrate mutlitudes of threads, we should consolidate it all to one area where people can feel free to ignore it as the hogwash it is or discuss it because they've got nothing else to...

If it's not absolutely clear, I'm very pissed about not only the quality of the reporting but also the quality of the writing by the DP when it comes to the AVs...the following is the last of many emails I've sent them...Feel free to continue and also post any responses you may or may not receive...We really should have a DP sticky thread even if it is just for *LOLZ*

To whom it may concern,

Please discontinue your coverage of the Avalanche. Not only does it seem to be incendiary, it is flat our wrong, bone headed and makes fans of the AVs look dumber by relation. Grammar aside, beat writers should at least be able to type the names of the players on any given night. What is so difficult with this concept? Type the players name correctly...if you can't, create a sheet with their names, and then simply use your friends Ctrl-C and Ctrl-V to your advantage. It's not that ****ing hard. Unless you are completely uninterested in what your are being paid to cover.

I pray to God you never allow Mike Chambers to write another article about my team. He does nothing but praise people who may have a connection to college hockey that he's covered at some point. It’s stupid, pointless and provides no real insight. It might come in handy at some point if the AVs are playing a team with a super-star obscure NCAA player in his first game, but this guy seriously has no clue about players who haven't played for a team he's covered in the past. He doesn't do homework and should NOT have a job covering an NHL team unless he is willing to work on that.

Terri used to be good but most of his articles lately have been comparison in nature and seem lazy…most bloggers who were a fan of the AVs in the 90s know more about the team than he does and provide more in context with clips to youtube and other media.

Don’t even get me started on Kizla….he’s your bulldog and fill the shoes well. He’s an *******, says **** that is meant only to stir more **** up and grins while avoiding all facial contact (because you shut down comments, and or don’t force him to respond to critical ones.) Yeah, Kizla = the DP Avery *slow golf clap*

Anyways, while I have supported your page in the past by clicking on links when they’ve seemed relevant and allowing all the advertisers to appear, I’ve recently adopted an ad-blocker program to remove this…On a side note to your ad company, many people who are fans of the Avalanche don’t live in the Colorado area…maybe ads that reach to the internet community are in order here….

Just another guy you never knew you lost advertising from,

Can we get a single linky stickied for conversations regarding all DP articles here?

the dp has been a running joke for years..not sure you conveyed how you really felt in that letter!!

I stopped reading their trash when it became quite apparent they had little interest in catering to the fans..I'm genuinely curious how a fraud like chambers can seriously draw a paycheck for being the "beat" guy though.

Worst part is there's nothing else. It's hard to create a buzz around a team when you have no real media coverage.

Edit: also, no competition means no incentive to get better.

I've always seen Chambers as just someone who does what he needs to do and that's it. Nothing more. He definitely doesn't have the passion of other writers for the NHL.

Dater's personal issues and incendiary personality aside, provided some good insight into the game and the team as he truly loves hockey and the NHL. I'm glad he's been able to reign it in a bit on twitter the past few years since his implosion in 2014.

I'd venture a guess you didn't get a response to that e-mail? I feel the same as you in many ways, but I'm not sure you went about writing that the correct way.

The Denver Post's coverage of the Avalanche is flat out embarrassing for a market the size of the metro area. There are so many people who follow this team with an incredible passion over the internet. How has the DP not looked to get one of those people? I could think of a couple people I follow on the internet who would not only provide actual coverage but thrive in the beat writer position. You would think it's money, but considering how many worthless sports writers the DP already employees that doesn't hold much water. To me the answer is clear, the DP doesn't give a rats ass about hockey and that probably won't ever change.

I try to ignore the DP stuff, and will continue to until there is a change in direction of their hockey coverage.

It's not necessarily their demographics though. How many of these online people are from Denver or even the state of Colorado? On hfboards at least it seems like AVS fans from Colorado are vastly outnumbered by Avs fans from other places. I see a bunch of western canadian fans, people from Quebec still following the team, people from Europe, people from other states that became fans during the glory days...of course there's TV and a few others that are "locals", but they are not that many.

I'm just happy we're starting to get some alternatives. BSN and Eurolanche don't have the resources of the DP, but they more than make up for it by actually giving a damn.

You're not wrong. I forget sometimes that the vast majority of the active Avs fans on the web are not local. Hell, I live in CO and I'm not even close to being local. If the DP really wanted to make a change they could easily hire someone from the web and have them move to Denver. I have to imagine most people would love that kind of job opportunity.

This website is a good alternative too, as well as finding the right people to follow on twitter. There are some pretty knowledgeable people out there, in Denver and outside of it. Now as to whether they'd want to be a beat writer or not, that is another question. Why they don't take a look at Sadowski is beyond me. Maybe they have, who knows?

I have a theory that the Post just sucks in general, all the way to the top. They are a poorly run newspaper in general and the poor Avs coverage is just a symptom of a larger problem. I was always a RMN guy when I lived out there anyway, so maybe I'm biased.

They should hire TV. No kidding.

DP shutting down the "All Things Avs" blog. Didn't think their coverage could get any weaker, but here we are.

http://blogs.denverpost.com/avs/2016/06/03/farewell-things-avs-2/23892/

Hahahahaha, I love it. Frei and Chambers get to do literally almost nothing now. They never spent any time doing any actual research, or digging up stories Av fans wanted to hear anyway.

Now all they have to do is watch a hockey game every couple days, and spend about 30 minutes a day working and occasionally tweeting something to rake in a pay check. What a job.

The denver sports journalism scene is almost as depressing to me as the actual Avs state of affairs. Chambers is Guenin and they're playing him 35 minutes a night on the top pairing

I was never a big Dater fan, but the quality of the coverage fell of a cliff after he got canned. Chambers doesn't know anything about hockey beyond the state of Colorado, and Frei just wants to work on his books. He comes off as though Avs coverage is beneath him.

It is sad. I know we get almost every bit of news on our own or from other sources, its not like we "need" the DP. But its sad that they still represent us and the Denver market especially. With Dater, it was the best thing for him to step away but obviously he has much more talent and knowledge in the area than either of those two combined. Frei was probably a good reporter 20 years ago, now he's just a writer with sort of a day job and how Chambers gets to do anything related to reporting is beyond me.

It took me a long time to warm up to them and I'm still often skeptical but BSN are brilliant for starting their thing when they did. They may never get that front line trust from the Avs organization to be given front line info but with so little coverage of the Avs despite the large fan base they will grow and grow. If the team ever turns the corner we want and takes that next step BSN is going to really start getting recognized as the DP gets phased out.

Agreed.

I know that I said some bad things about them in the past, but I was absolutely wrong. Their growth in Year 2 has me excited to see where they go in the future.

Frei didn't want to be put back on "the beat". Ever since it has happened, he's conveyed a sense that it was "beneath him" to be doing it. I'm pretty sure he's alluded to that publicly before (either on Twitter or on the now-defunct All Things Avs Blog).

It's sad in the sense that you talked them representing the Denver market. EXCELLENT case in point being that ridiculous video Frei and Chambers did about Barrie, and Frei saying "I think Roy thinks that Barrie is best seen as a #5 Defenseman/PP Specialist"....after that it was translated to "Roy thinks Barrie's a #5" and when Avs fans would say that's wrong, we'd get "Well, your beat writer(s) think so!"

I concur, AJ and BSN are trying hard and they do have the access to help provide what is missing from the DP. I hope folks do give them a chance.

Its just baffling "beat writers" aren't doing any sort of due diligence on the AHL coaching search, MacKinnon's contract, the combine, any of our prospects outside of Butcher, the draft, and the Barrie situation after Bob and Friedman blew it up, and Radulov, they even asked about him during the season! That's just basic level stuff, the put out a video just to stir some crap, a 5 second article on the draft and their Butcher is oppressed and that counts as doing their job. Which we are obviously living just fine without but everyone nationally goes to them to see whats going on with the Avs.
