Delayed suspensions: How often does it happen?

In game four of the '87 finals, Ron Hextall took a lumberjack-style swat at the back of Kent Nillson's legs. Hextall was suspended for the first eight games of the following season, but was allowed to play out the remainder of the series.

What were the circumstances surrounding this event that allowed the suspension to be delayed? Are there any other occurrences of this happening?
